Well, last night was the maiden voyage of my recently aquired '67 Vibrolux Reverb, halfway through the first song,"One Way Out", the amp took it's que and left out,soundwise... :?
No sound at all,a quick check... everything looked okay, pilot light was on...so I quickly grabbed my trusty '66 Deluxe Reverb, turned on,plugged in and played the rest of the night until 3am.
Today at some point I'll bring it in,and do some trouble shooting...hope it's something minor and simple....fact is,do not feel secure that everything is always going to function perfectly, this is the first time in a loooong time to have an amp go dead onstage...but like I always repeat the old saying..."two is one,one is none."

Good advice there Reb...but you might want to stop playing One Way Out  Of course nothing like having a 66 Deluxe as a backup, not much of a step down :?: ...or is that sideways

I'm just spit-balling here.... as I am no tech. But I would be suspect of any offspring that might have shared the stage with you last night and their potential desire to see that new Vibrolux Reverb go home with them. I'd check to make sure someone didn't just unplug the speaker on you

  Well close, blew the old CTS speakers, that's why I always buy new Weber speakers mostly,or have the originals reconed, that old paper is usually gonna go at some point...the originals sound good but I can't rely on them at high volumes,if you have speakers from the '60s still going strong, consider yourself lucky....mine are all in boxes in the closet. :D
And yep phansford,my son was really diggin' the sound till they blew,he was playing through my '60 Super and sounded great.
T2....we can't stop playing that song we always open our set with it....if something else decides to go one way out though,we might have to reconsider.

Ahh Man, not the CTS speakers! My condolences, just glad it wasn't something that would have taken a lot of time to figure out. Used to play slide on that piece, never had any bad karma with that one. Keep it in the list! Art

Rebel, good luck with the re-cone. Kinda why I usually box old primo speakers, too. I think a LOT of ppl do this. Then, put the originals back in just before selling the amp. So, you have speakers that haven't seen voltage for MANY YEARS, all of a sudden getting "dimed."

I know some folks that actually ramp up old unused speakers (like 1930's vintage Field-Coil types) with a signal generator and a Variac. Claiming the VC needs to be brought up slowly to operating temps. Could be a bunch of hooey... but, this certainly works for other components within the amp.

Very nice amp you have there. Good luck with the speakers. Whether you go the Weber route (I put 10A125 in my Super Reverb--- boxed the CTS) or re-coning.

Yeah, the guy stated that he had this amp in his room since '96...who knows what the reality is,but the way they blew with the volume on 6 makes me think they have been sitting unused or played at bedroom levels.
Last night I ordered a couple of Weber F150T's I think it was, replacements for the original Jensen C10Q's...I really like Webers and have them in most of my amps, they get really close to the old Jensen sound when broken in well, now for the couple of weeks of waiting to see what this amp will really sound like....the tone was good with the CTS speakers while they worked, but they didn't reach the sweetspot!
Thanks for the compliments and comments y'all.

Bummer!

If you don't go the recone route, I would humbly suggest looking at Warehouse speakers and their G12C's. I put a pair in my Bassman cab, and they're amazing. I'm selling the Weber California's in my Bandmaster combo and will replace with these. Much sweeter sound, less harsh. I see you've already ordered the Webers; may be a good test to try out the Warehouse ones down the road.

Slightly different backup, but I always carry a Smokey amp (I have the plastic one, not the cigarette box) in my guitar case. If something in the amp blows, it has enough gumption to drive a 2x12 cab -- although the amp will need to be mic'd.

I'm still not ruling out the Warehouse speakers Ned,after all the good reviews I've seen about them...I'm always trying different speakers and combinations, and those are probably next on the "try them out" list. :D

Reb...you going to recone those CTS's? Were the CTS's original to the amp?...Seems I remember from your post announcing the "New" amp that they were. I would have thought you would go the recone route to keep the amp stock. I know you said you weren't crazy about them, but maybe since they were ready to go...either way, just a fan of the CTS Alnico 10's and thought I would throw my humble opinion in since you gotta do something with them anyway.

FWIW

Hey T2...naw,the CTS speakers aren't the originals, they're dated '69 and probably replaced the original Jensens or Oxfords,if they were original I would have them reconed, I still might someday,I have several blown or semi damaged speakers that will be reconed,or at least should be....in my '66 Pro Reverb the original Utah speakers were in good shape, though they just didn't have the tone for me,of all the original speakers I've had in vintage Fenders, the Utahs are my least favorite
The CTS speakers in this Vibrolux had pretty good tone, until they blew, too bad....that's why I tried to get by with them for awhile,...just didn't know they wouldn't make it through the first song in a gig...the volume got 'em. :(

Reb, I didn't think they were original. Thought maybe Oxfords, seemed like Fender used the Oxford 10's quite a bit during that time. Seems every Tremolux cab I have seen had em in it.

I would agree about the Utahs...never liked them myself...even the lables looked goofy :!:
