This is a pickin' question. There's probably another place for this, but I'm more at home here at "vintage amps". Just started(couple of months ago) to play lead with my eyes closed. Used to always watch the finger board for reference. Found the blind approach to be so much smoother and intuitive. Have no idea why this works out this way. Just wondering if anyone has had this experience or any insight into this phenomenon. I'm not jivin'! It's a real life difference,at least for me. Art... And yeah, the amps seem to know the difference-wierd!

Art,
I know what you mean about the vintage amp section being home at the forums...it seems that the folks here are more serious about music and tone and seem to be more experienced musicians in general,I like this section the best.
As far as playing with my eyes closed...I do it most when I'm soloing and really into the mood of the song....I've always been at home in jam bands,in the vein of the Allman Brothers, and when you know the notes and their place on the fingerboard in your mind, then it seems more from the soul when they flow through your fingers without concentrating at looking at the fretboard to figure out where you should go....does that make sense?

Not "probably", but definitely.

I agree. We should keep the topics where they belong. Otherwise, what's the point of having specific sections for specific topics? There is such a thing as "off topic", right? Are we going to turn every part of the forum into the lounge, clogged up?

It seems that if a member hangs out on the forum for vintage amps, they might expect topics about, oh I don't know,.....vintage amps? I know that I do. :)

Yeah, think there are a lot of very experienced ppl on this part of the Community. I know that I "hear" the tone better when not staring down at the fretboard, all the time. Better for those subtle tones and articulations. IMHO.

Until you get off by a fret, of course.

It always seems like you want the last word on things....

Simma down now.

This is a community, we have rules and guidelines that we should adhere to. The forum was laid-out in such a manner as to have specific topics, and there is even a section for stuff like this "pickin" post, it's called the lounge. It's like going to the Spanish forum and posting in English.

I rarely get the last word, intentionally. You are mistaken.

I personally don't want to see this part of the forum clogged up with stupid nonsense like the lounge is full of. To be clear, this thread isn't stupid nonsense, it's just in the wrong place.

I can understand a newbie's confusion about where to post, but not those that should know better. Feeling "at home" here has nothing to do with where to post, it's not anyone's home, and it doesn't change the way things should be. Those that "hang out" here, are expecting to see posts about Vintage Amps. If not, then they would hang out somewhere else, eh?

So, I take it that if Brad says to stay on topic you would listen?

It seems a lot of musicians "close" their eyes when they get into a groove, as Rebelsoul states he does. Whether this makes you play better is not really the issue as much as getting to know the instrument so well that you don't "need" to look at the fretboard. I think a lot of it is also muscle memory. If you practice long enough without looking at your fretting hand, you build that muscle memory - as well as train your ear in tonal terms. If closing your eyes helps get you there, so much the better.

One of the problems I have is shifting from guitars with differing scales. It takes me about one song to get my muscles shifted to a shorter scale. So I need to watch the fretboard for a song or so otherwise I'm playing the song either flat or sharp.

I think one value of not watching the fretboard is so you can watch and interact with other musicians. When I was in my high school garage band - I always watched and worked with the drummer, but than again he was the only one of us with talent.

FWIW - I have no problem with your thread. Just add OT: in the title and those who don't want to participate can skip over the thread.

Good rule of thumb - if you think your topic may be off-topic for the section of the forum, then just preface it as such.

Same applies if you're replying to a thread and change the topic -- it's appropriate (and polite) to mention "possible topic swerve" or similar.

Shimmi, honey, Art is not a newby. He is a well respected poster and a fine amp tech. He has been away awhile and it's good to have him back. Please don't chap his chops.

Glad you're feeling it, Art. My guitars wail when I grab them, and it's not pleasant. :D

Well to help out here and soothe your concerns shimmilou, since you're preaching to the choir....the following four vintage amps will be loaded into vehicles on what is supposed to be a rainy Tennessee Sat. night, and four Fender Strats,(not vintage, but reissues) will be played through at least two amps, since it's always a good choice to have backups...you know the old saying,"two is one,one is none".....
Present time is 1:34am Sat. and I'm awake...but this time tomorrow morning everything will be smelling like a mixture of smoke, fried grease and beer, hot vacuum tubes and vintage tolex......and I'll probably play with my eyes closed at some point.

The ever faithful 1967 SF Deluxe Reverb,my son's second choice...this amp was used in Miami's Criteria Studio to make a blues album,(not me),but by a guy who had a great bluesman's name, just wish I could remember who he was...anyway.

So,while I'm out sweating and no doubt listening to the standard request question ..."do y'all know ______?" ...make sure every i is dotted and every t is crossed in the appropriate section of forum land.
