I have the two speaker columns from a PA100. I am trying to find out what the wattage of the speakers/columns is. I understand they are 32ohm speakers and the cab is wired to 8 ohms.

I would like to use these cabs with a Crown or QSC 200 or 300 watt power amp. Not sure if that will work.

Thanks in advance!!

Marc

Schemo shows the speakers only rated for 100 watts RMS.

Thanks for the diagram. Yet I can't find where it says that for the speakers, I just find where it says the output of the amp is 100watts RMS.

Is it a given for the enclosures that they will have the same rating as the amp?

With lack of other evidence, that's what I'd assume. Have any photos? Maybe the speakers were changed out to heavier duty ones. Though, I kinda doubt it for a PA system.

I took the back off one of the enclosures, and the speakers are stock. No info on them other than ohms, "Fender special design speaker" decal and I think a serial number? The last of which showed no info on Internet search. If it is a 100 watt cab, does that mean each of the 4 in it are 25 watt?

Correct. A kinda the rule of thumb:

Cab power handling = (power handling of weakest speaker) X (# of speakers)

So, for 100 watts = (25 watts, if all the speakers are the same model) x 4 speakers for this cab.

From what I've researched it's very likely that a PA setup won't have matching power ratings. Is there an electrical tool/meter that I can get that will find out this wattage?

Sure would b nice if there was a schemo of the cabinet too.

Thanks again.

I don't know of an easy way to accurately measure the wattage handling capacity of speakers. Can you see any serial or other product ID on the speakers themselves? Could at least give you the nominal values when they were manufactured.

Sticker on the chassis of the back of one speaker says;

011194 32 OHM

"465" is Oxford Speakers code. Look like any of these?

There's only one 8 incher on this list and it has lighter paper, mine are black. Plus the one in this list mentions a companion subwoofer. Mine didn't have that, at least not as part of the PA100.

I have read in some other places that Alnico was used at least for part of the lifetime of the PA100.

I would venture a guess that 4 x 8-inch speakers are NOT going to work with a 200+ watt amp. The magnets and VC would need to be extra heavy duty. My guess is the 100 watt PA-100 output is prolly the limit. And that's only for PA use. Not as an instrument speaker cab.

Thanks for all the info I appreciate it. Gonna go ahead and consider them 25 watts.

I do have one speaker in one cabinet that is dead.
Is there a way I can put a new 8 inch, 8 ohm speaker in there and still keep the enclosure input at 8 ohms.

The dead speaker is 32 ohm. I have a Behringer amp that is faulty and wanted to take out its 8 inch speakers and they are 8 ohm speakers.

You can use your power amp with these speakers -- just don't turn the volume of the power amp up all the way. Your power amp only delivers its full rated power with the attenuator knobs (volume) 100% clockwise.

These PA speakers would be very inefficient compared to anything today; if this is a fun project, I'd say go ahead and try it out but know you may blow the speakers if you try to get any type of volume out of them with your setup.

I'd also suggest that while you could replace the speakers with more efficient ones to handle more power, you're better off getting a good pair of 1x12 speakers if you really need a PA. Get them up on stands with the HF horns above eye level and you'll be all good.
