Tried the mil spec Philips 5V4GA labeled 5AR4 and bypassed the gain stage tubes with F&T 22mfd/160 VDC caps in my SFPR "test-bed" amp. Two things.

1.) The 5V4GA is a 5AR4. The amp OEM is a 5U4GB (AB1164 circuit). With the Philips replacement you get 420 VDC on the anode plates, same as the 5U4GB and a GZ34/5AR4. Plus, a nice 30 second warm-up period. Like the 5AR4. This rectifier can take as much abuse as any good NOS 5U4GB or 5AR4/GZ34. Played the dang amp all day, above "6."

2.) The F&T 33mfd/160VDC lytics as cathode bypass caps in the gain stage (esp: the vibrato and reverb tubes) are awesome. Much more punchy tone than 25mfd/50VDC Spragues Atoms. And that's saying a lot, as Spragues are no slotches. So, if you have a kinda weak vibrato or reverb. And have tried new tubes, tightening sockets, new resistors, etc---consider this mod. One thing. The F&T are big! As big as old Astrons.
