Post a few photos. (Amp porn is always appreciated here  )

The Fender Field Guide (ampwares now) is always a good place to start your research.

Without any photos, my initial thoughts would be that someone has re-covered the amp in black tolex.

What's the backstory on the amp? Where and how did you get it? Do you know any of the ownership history? How's she sound? Can you tell how much is original and what's be altered? Curious minds want to know. :D

I can't tell if that's the tweed that's been painted black or if it's been recovered...but do some research before you even think about selling it!!!
The narrow panel tweed Bassman amps are considered some of the best guitar amps of all time....the first Marshall amps were copied after the '59 Bassman.
Those pics are dark and it's hard to tell much other than the shape, the inside could have been hacked who knows, see if there's a tube chart pasted on the inside of the amp,and see if you can get some better pics for us to look at.
Once again....if it's a real late '50s Fender Bassman, you might have the amp of all amps sitting there.

I was thinking the same thing once I say the photos. Someone could have painted the tweed.

Reb - Is there a way to remove the paint and not damage the tweed?

I'm not going to be bold enough to ask where you bought the amp and how much you paid for it, but I saw a 1958 5F6 Bassman for sale at a local guitar/amp show and the seller wanted $20K for it. It looked to be about the same condition as yours. Still in Tweed but pretty banged up.

Buck Owens supposedly played through a black tolex 59 Bassman. Maybe ....... Nah. Couldn't be. Could it?

$20 K for a Bassman is way off the market. They are typically in the $6,000 range. (I limited my search to 1958-1960 Bassman)

Cowtown (the guitar shop that shows up on Pawn Stars) has a 1958 in black.... its been recovered.

There is a recovered tweed Bassman (I think 5E6 or 5F6, not 5F6-A) up here in Boston for about 5k. I know the amp tech who works at the shop selling it and he says it was sent back to Fender at some point and re-tolexed by them, so it seems that at least some of these had been redone in black tolex by the factory.

I don't know if it could be done, but one thing is for sure, there were more than one tweed or brown tolex amps painted black back in the day...so there's probably something on a site somewhere that deals with that.

i got tom wheeler's book 'the soul of tone' for xmas and there are transition amps such as champs etc that were 'tweed' but covered (original) in black (or other) tolex. apparently, there also examples of very early tolex amps done in tweed. fender was known for mix and matching particularly during transitions (older parts/finishes on newer mdels and vice-versa). the early 60s amps were a little haywire, for example 'brown twins' that never supposedly existed etc...if i remember correctly the tweed bassman didn't transition into the 60s piggyback style straight away, so its perfectly possible that if dated correctly that it could be a late' tweed' bassman. seriously, check the date - get a pro to do it if unsure..

If your question concerns value - absolutely. That era Bassman is the holy grail of Tweed Fenders for a lot of players and collectors. :D

For example if you're a Springsteen fan:
The following information is taken from an article "The E Street Band's
Equipment" by Dave Marsh, "Musician" No. 30, February 1981.

"Amps: Four pre-CBS Fender Bassman amps, ca. 1958-1962;"

So..... is it black tolex or tweed painted black? Inquiring minds want to know.

Also..... what are the speakers? Can you tell?
