For those of you who have built your own Champ clones, what kit did you use? How did you like it? Would you recommend it?

From other forum posts and google, I've found these so far: Weber, Marsh, Mission, Torres, STF and BYOC. Then there are others that aren't Champ clones, but their own small amp designs, such as Guytronix and Allen. I'm sure there are others I haven't found yet.

I'm looking not for the lowest price, but rather for a kit with the best quality components. I'm also looking for good instructions, since this will be my first project. A schematic is a given, I assume, but a theory of operation would be great, too.

I have an Associates Degree in Electronics, and was an electronics technician from 1987-2000, although not a guitar amp technician. I've replaced tubes, transformers and caps on my amps, no major mods. I'm looking forward to this!

Thanks for the help!

Mission doesn't do a Champ kit - only a 5E3 Deluxe.

I too have been curious about a Champ kit. BYOC is intriguing because I've built a few of their pedal kits in the past and they were great kits.

I haven't built a Champ kit, but I did build a Marsh Tweed Twin kit this past summer as my first kit build. I highly recommend the Marsh kits. The Marsh kits are essentially Mojotone kits with upgraded parts that he clearly labels for you as opposed to the Weber kits (you end up with a bag of caps and resistors with nothing indicating the values other than what's on them). You also have available upgrades for the transformers to Mercury Magnetics. The standard transformers are the Mojotone trannies which are made by Heyboer. My kit came with instructions that I really ended up not using. All that you really need is the schematic showing which values of component is placed where on the board. Beyond that, instructions would say nothing more than "solder here". I learned that you do not want to over-solder. I did this and couldn't figure out what was wrong and sent the chasis back to Mike who reworked it for me and got it purring. Mike is always an e-mail away, too, if you have issues. I think you would be pretty happy with his kit.
