What's the difference, tone-wise, between the Champ 5E3 and the 5F1?

5E3 is the Deluxe, not a Champ.

Pehaps you meant what is the difference betwen a 5E1 Champ

http://ampwares.com/schematics/champ_5e1.pdf

and a 5F1 Champ

http://ampwares.com/schematics/champ_5f1.pdf

The 5E1 has a cathode bypass cap on the first half of the 12AX7 which pumps the gain up by about 5 - 6 dB so the amp may be a little louder. Comparing the tone of my modded Champion 600 configured as a 5E1 to the final 5F1 configuration, the 5F1 seems to have a little more midrange and a smoother overdrive. Because the gain of a 5F1 is less than a 5E1, it takes a little stronger signal to overdrive the 5F1 compared to the 5E1.

Bluesky, the 5E1 runs 8/8/8mfd caps and a choke in the power supply. Whereas, the 5F1 runs a 16/8/8 & no choke. The 5E1 "tends" to be a tad quieter. With a little less voltage going to the OPT.

Just some other little trivia... :?

Bluesky and BMW: Thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for. I'm looking to either build or buy one of these soon.

Thanks. I know. I left the power supply differences out to avoid complicating matters. :D
