Hi all, I am brand new to this forum....just acquired a vintage 1965 Super Reverb (not reissue). I have new power and rectifier tubes in it, all-original pre-amp tubes and original caps. Love the sound EXCEPT when I use any sort of effects pedal. There seems to be a distorted or fuzz type sound around the effect. For instance, when using my delay pedal, the original note sounds fine but all of the delayed notes have that unmusical distortion or fuzz around it. If I use an overdrive pedal, I can hear the same sound around the edges of the usual overdrive sound. I get this sound using either the Normal and Vibrato channels, whether using battery or power supply - and swapping pre-amp tubes one at a time did not seem to improve the sound. My pedals work and sound perfectly fine through my other amps.

A reputable tech is taking a look at it for me, is replacing all the caps and drifted resistors, checking bias, etc....but my question is this: does this sound like some thing that will be fixed by replacing the 46 year old caps? Could there be some thing else weird going on? I have been searching the web for days now and have not found any thing on this problem for this amp, or any other for that matter.

Thanks!

Seriously-drifted components in and around the various pre-amp sub-circuits (and their individual tubes) could indeed be the culprit, especially those associated with the phase-inverter stage (V6). It could also be power-tube related as well -- did you check (and adjust if necessary) the bias voltage?

How about the amp's speakers -- have you checked them?

It has got to be something wrong with the amp. My '72 SFSR, while not exactly the same circuit, accepts pedals very well.

A good tune up should solve the problem. And when you get it back, we need pics...we love amp porn here!

Thanks!

Thanks, guys!

The only "good" guitar I am using is a Gibson Les Paul w/ stock pups (passive). The amp sounded ok straight in without effects...the problem noted only seems to be when using any of my stompboxes. Test the guitar and pedals with a Marshall 2266 and A Tiny Terror and every thing sounded as it should. Guess we will wait to see how she sounds when she comes back with new caps and a tune-up.

Will definitely work on posting the amp porn when she comes back. Quite the cougar I have!

We'll be the judge of that.

Try this. Swap V1 and V2 (the two 7025/12AX7 tubes on the far right hand side of the amp). These are the input tubes for the NORMAL and VIBRATO channel. Use a little contact cleaner and be sure no tube pins are bent. Make sure the jack for the guitar is making good contact with plug. May want to use some contact cleaner, here too.

See if the distortion from the pedals is now on the NORMAL channel. If so, you have a bad 7025/12AX7. For pedal use, esp multiple pedals-- I like to use a 5751 in the input stage. Sovtek makes a good one. As does Philips/Sylvania mil spec JAN 5751. Both are quiet and can take a bit of overload from the pedal, better than a stock 12AX7 (or 7025) type.

Scroll down the page to find the placement of the two tubes (layout):

You can also use 12AT7 in V1 on the channel you use. This tube have lower gain than 12AX7 .

Kind of pointless to ask us to guess what the problem could be, when you've already taken it to a tech and don't have the amp in front of you to check anything.
