First off I was able to figure out a lot from the code but I'm still stumped on the actual year. I picked up a peavey 4x12 real cheap loaded with Fender speakers. One speaker is diferent than the other 3. Let me start with the matching 3 speakers, all frame and cone codes are the same on each. They measure 13 ohms. code is 465-418 and 125L6-1. I know that they are Oxfords made in the 18th week of...'64 or '74? How can I tell with out knowing what they originally came out of?

The non matching fender speaker is 6 ohms. Code is 328533. I know that it is a Utah speaker from the 33rd week of '65 or '75? Again how can I tell the actual year?

All the speakers have the blue Fender label on the back. I did notice when searching the web that some have "made in usa" on the sticker and some dont. All 4 of my speakers have that if that is any help.

I have photos and can upload them to photobucket if that would help.

Thanks

I don't know what year those Oxfords are but you can clearly tell they aren't 60s,and the Utah is from the '70s maybe?

The Utah presents an anomaly. Every Utah from the 'late '60 or early '70s that I've seen used a label like this......

Image

Like most OEM Utahs made for Fender, this speaker carries the FMI P/N of "081810" which correlates to a driver intended for a Bandmaster, Bandmaster Reverb, Quad Reverb, or Deluxe Reverb. I'm betting the OP's speaker actually dates to the '80s -- and the enlarged magnet structure tells me it was intended for high-power applications (perhaps a red-knob "Evil Twin" or a Concert Amp).

The Oxfords are also unusual in that they all seem to be fitted with front-loading gaskets. No Fender amps from the '60 mounted the speakers in that manner and only a handful of cabs from the '70s were thus configured. I'm betting that these drivers are from the '80s as well -- perhaps from a 4 x 12 "snake-skin" Showman or carpeted M80 enclosure.

HTH

Didnt the speaker code change in the 70's? Giving the year 2 digits instead of 1 like the way mine are. If they were from the 80's or newer as suggested my code would be 7 digits and not 6. The oxfords have a "L" code making them 30 watt speakers..is this considered high power application?

Your "Oxfords" look like no Oxford I've ever seen before. And the designation on the ID label is very suspect.

These are genuine Oxford 12L6's from 1974, pulled from my all-original '74 Bandmaster cab......

Note the quirky design geometry of the stamped-steel frame, the six-digit "465-412" EIA code, and the Fender P/N (081810) indicating its intended use.

@ Retroverbial, are you thinking I have some cheap reproductions that someone badged to make look like genuine Fender speakers? My part number is 010662, what is Fenders intended use for that part number. (if its a real number)

This is not beyond the realm of possibility. Labels are easy to counterfeit or bootleg (there are repro mylar Fender speaker decals available on Ebay at this very moment).

I don't have that info -- but the number is formatted correctly for a Fender P/N.

You have a real enigma to solve, no doubt about it.

I did a seach on the 125L6-1 number and came across and old archived thread. The guy was looking for info on a speaker from an old Bassman cab with the same Fender p/n and cone number as mine, the only diference is his are dated 10 weeks older than mine. It was said that it is a "64 Oxford bass speaker. Could this be why mine look different than all of your speakers cause its a bass speaker and not a guitar speaker?

Here it is:

The specified Oxford speaker for a Bassman cab would've been the 12T6-10......the same type used in a Twin Reverb guitar amp.

This is a 12T6-10 from the 11th week of 1969......

These two Oxfords, I removed from my 1968 (stamped) Bandmaster Cabinet which I bought in the 70's.
To see the 2 pics, please go to the site and scroll down to bottom of page ... I can't figure out how to post them on this thread
