In a way it is, Reb. But the glue acts as the catalyst when combined with the residual pine sap. These "stains" appeared relatively quickly (sometimes right in the factory before the amp had been shipped to a dealer) and I believe led Leo et al to make the decision to ultimately switch to black Tolex.

Wow,I didn't know the knots showed up that early, thanks for the always interesting info RJ.
I had also thought that was a large part of the reason for black tolex, the knots showed through in tweed, and also with the tweed getting ratty, and the blondes getting dirty, the brown was a step in the right direction, but only black effectively hides the knots and dirt and still looks very good.

Indeed.

But we still love those vintage tweeds, browns, and blondes -- warts and all.

I just saw this post and that does have to be one of the rarest Fender Amps I have ever seen...and that one surely rates a HOLY SCHMOKES :!: :!: :!: :!:

I have seen a couple blonde Tremoluxes in my day and some just about as clean, but never one with those tubes. It sure would be interesting to know why Leo went with those tubes vs the 6V6s? I guess when I take my dirt nap I'll be able to pick his brain on that one! Unless Arjay has a nugget of info as to why, besides it being an error in his ways!

One great find for sure.

Unfortunately, no -- I can't really offer a reason. And of all the available books covering Leo and his early work, I would've expected Tom Wheeler to share the rationale in his "The Soul Of Tone" treatise since he interviewed Fender several times over nearly a decade while preparing the manuscript. But Wheeler was strangely vague regarding the 6G9 Tremolux. Thus, we're left to surmise based on our own devices and preconceptions. I suspect it may have been a case of simple logistics -- the orphan tubes, their Rube Goldbergesque mounts and retainers, the lack of an adjustable biasing system......it's difficult to know for certain. But the follow on 6G9-A revision, powered by trued-and-true 6L6's, really made for a nice mid-powered package that delivered the prototypical "Fender sound".

Really, there's no telling what Leo tried that never made it to a finished production amp even in small numbers....and with custom orders, there are some really rare things out there.
I just picture him trying a little bit of everything...people who knew him said he thought in a way that left no stone unturned, and slowly and deliberately figured out every detail.

Considering the popularity of the newer Fender amps with EL84s, maybe this is one of Leo's ideas that was simply ahead of it's time.

No. It was an experiment that ended up consigned to the ash heap of history. All of his subsequent amp designs that bore his surname on the baffle board were based on the 5881/6L6GC and the 6V6GT. All of them.

Yep! 6V6GTs and 6L6GCs...the Fender sound that made R&R music history in most of the recordings and live shows of the 50s and 60s....until that Bassman ripoff Marshall amp got into the act.

Arjay, I'd be really interested in your opinion of the Egnater Rebel. The effect between the two sets of power tubes is subtle but there especially at the higher wattage settings. It's funny, with my Strat I lean more towards 6v6 side. I think I'm just more familiar with the tone. With my Gibson and P-90's it gets real interesting at 12:00 with the volume bump and the blend of 6v6 and EL84. Those P-90's will sustain for days with that 60's Tribute. I can even dial in a little Santana sustain with the watts dialed down to ten or less. I find it fun to experiment with.

I'm dying to try one out, Supro -- I just haven't had the time of late. A demo is definitely high on my things-to-do list, though it may not happen until after Christmas is over and done with.
