It may be hyperbole, but they are hard to find. Is that 15000$ worth of hard to find? I'm not sure. Any guesses from you guys as to how many of these were actually made?

I got my non-6BQ5 amp back from the tech and will post some pics soon.

I saw that.

GADZOOKS!

I wouldn't even hazard a "WAG" as to its true worth but the seller is correct -- they're as rare as a virgin strolling through the lobby of the Tropicana in Las Vegas on a Saturday night. I've never even seen one personally......only photos in books.

Now ain't that something! I've never seen detailed pics of one, that's beyond cool.
One thing I want to point out is cosmetic, most here will know this but for those who don't....the brown circular stains seen on this amp and others are pine knots in the cabinet, when I saw these years ago I didn't know what they were, when you see that,it's a sure sign of "vintage". :D

Wow - learn something new everyday. I guess there is oil in the knots that eventually seep out?

Actually it's a chemical reaction between the remaining sap in the lumber and the organic horse-hide adhesive used to affix the Nubtex to the cabinet.

Yes......

He built 200 or so amps using those Oscar Meyer weiner-sized bottles then mercifully saw the error of his ways and corrected himself.

I didn't know that Arjay,I just figured it was the pine resin oozing through,or trying to....learned something new also.

In a way it is, Reb. But the glue acts as the catalyst when combined with the residual pine sap. These "stains" appeared relatively quickly (sometimes right in the factory before the amp had been shipped to a dealer) and I believe led Leo et al to make the decision to ultimately switch to black Tolex.

So Arjay your opinion of this tube is not high it seems?

I have been playing my 6L6 Tremolux ab'd with my DRRI. The reissue has a less textural sound (more treble-ly overall), breaks up a lot sooner, and the breakup seems softer or smoother.

The Tremolux has a more textured sound (more distinction between high mids and lows) breaks up later (above 7 or 8 ), and the breakup is stronger and slightly more brittle it seems to me.

Any of you guys have interesting/blasphemous opinions on the variation between tubes?

There's never been, there isn't now, nor will there ever be a 6BQ5/EL84 amp that strikes my fancy.

The Egnaters with their dual 6V6/EL84 output stage are intriguing and I hope to take one for a demo soon, if nothing else than to satisfy my curiousity.

That said, there are plenty of players who swear by their AC15's, AC30's, Blues Pro's, Pro Junior's, and various and sundry other platforms that use this bottle.

Vive la differénce!

Yeah, Arjay, I've played a few blues jrs and I can't seem to get them to sound right, they seem to be too glassy for my taste. Any thoughts on the difference between 6V6 and 6L6 or preference between the two?

s3mamill,

Your description of 6V6 and 6L6 differences is right on. Generally speaking, the 6V6 is easily driven to distortion at low volumes, and the distortion is smooth and creamy, not a lot of headroom when clean. The 6L6 has a cleaner, clearer more solid and tight sound with better low-end, more headroom, with more aggressive sounding distortion as compared to a 6V6.

Although, the sound also depends a lot on the amp circuitry. The Twkr 40 with 6L6s gets a really nice, smooth and creamy distortion when pushed using the gain and tone controls and switches, very much like a DR, and also gets a nice clear and clean 6L6 sound when dialed in clean, much like a HRDlx, and close to a TR. And the drive on the 40 can be further pushed to sound close to a MB kind of distortion.

I was pleasantly surprised that the 40 gave me the 6V6 DR distortion, 6L6 TR clean, and a MB drive that I wanted in a new amp, all with it's 6L6s. :D

Shimmilou has provided an outstanding overview of the salient differences between the two bottle types. As for a preference, that's hard to determine. I own both types of platforms. Generally though, I rely on the 6L6-fired amps for serious stage work. For periodic studio assignments the board engineer insists I use my '65 Princeton Reverb.
