Yesterday I was at a friend's house for some beer and a good conversation.
needless to say, once I saw his 56 strat and 55 deluxe we never got to the talking part...(but regarding the beer it's a different story)

This pair has the best tone ever!
Now, I know 50's strats can sometimes be amazingly great guitars and sometimes not so much but my real shock is this Deluxe! every time I bump into one I'm blown away! you can connect a broom with few strings to it and it'll sound amazing!

we goofed around and recorded some sound samples of the couple, you can check 'em out at this link Tonepedia - Strat 56

So I just wanted to share this with you, and realized I got to get a Deluxe! hunting time!
Any suggestions regarding the specific model? 5C3, 5D3 or 5E3?

The 5E3 seems to be the preferred version among tweed Deluxe devotees but the earlier variants are certainly worthy of consideration.

Be prepared to spend lots of money on a tweed Deluxe no matter what model....if you have the need for tweed there's also others to consider, like the Vibrolux or Tremolux....just to name a couple.

Hi Retroverbial and Rebelsoul, thanks for the replies.

What's the difference between the 5E3 and the 5D3(the one on the tonepedia recording) ??

I know it may cost 2000$ more or less, but when I played the tremolux I didn't fell the same, though it's got the best tremolo ever.

I guess I'll just wait for a good bargain. if you guys know of one feel free to share the info (:

The main difference is that the 5D3 uses both halves of the 12AX7 for the PI, so the 5E3 has a little more preamp gain. The Plate voltages for preamp and PI tubes, and screen voltages are also a little different between the two, and the 5D3 doesn't have a ground switch, but otherwise nearly identical. I would venture a guess that the 5D3 has a little cleaner sound than the 5E3.

Does the tube chart in the amp cab list the model (5E3, 5D3)?

We're always on the lookout for bargains, but for me they're few and far between.
Estate sales are always a good place to look,I think there's going to be more vintage amps on the market because of the economy and the boomer generation who could have put them in the closet are getting older and their kids don't always value their stuff when they inherit something.
Having grown up with Fender,in the late '50's thru the golden years of Pre-CBS....I just wish I had known how the value of the guitars and amps would have skyrocketed.

Hi shimmilou,

it had 5D3 written on the tube chart.

Thanks for this great explanation, you know your stuff man.

I mainly liked how it breaks(like most people I guess) and didn't really see any point in playing low volume...like you can hear in the sound sample it's not the best sounding amp for clean tone. so I'll try and find one 5E3 here in Israel (not an easy task) and check it out.

In 1985 I was in the Navy and driving from Groton, CT to San Diego with per diem for the whole trip and two weeks advance pay. I stopped in Gruhn's in Nashville with $1800 with my heart set on a Broadcaster. He didn't have one in stock at the time but he had a couple of real Nocasters for around that price. He also had a '50's Gretch White Falcon for $900 and there were others that I can no longer recall. I spent about an hour browsing and left without buying anything. Those guitars are worth a fortune now and my $1800 is long gone.
