I've had one Sprague Atom fail shortly after replacement. I have ramped up every new cap job since. As a precaution to wiring and to re-form the cap. As you never know how long those "new" caps have been sitting on someone's shelf. Never hurts. And I've yet to have another Sprague fail---including Sprague cap cans.

Just fired up amp and all I can say is wow. Worth the wait and all the work, the 50 watt weber sounds great and its not even broken in. This is by far the nicest sounding speaker ive heard in a while, Thanks for all the help and opinions , jim

Is the rectifier tube maybe 5AR4?

I would want to find out exactly why the voltage is that high. :?: If it is just that the transformer is different, and its output is too high (I would want to verify this), maybe a 5Y3 rectifier would lower the DC supply enough. The 5Y3 might give more voltage sag also, if that is an issue for you or not.

If you just want new production tubes that can handle the higher Plate voltages, the JJ 6V6 S and the GT 6V6 S both handle Plate voltages up to 500 volts, screen up to 450 volts. The EH 6V6 is good for up to 450 Plate volts, and is recommended for the DRRI (at 400 Plate volts). I have been trying out all three of these tubes in a HRDlx, with Plate and screen at 450 VDC.

The EH sound wonderful, as you expect from a 6V6, with smooth, rich and creamy breakup, easily over-driven. But note that the 350 volt screen grid rating of the tube is greatly exceeded in the HRDlx (450 volts), and of course New Sensor said that they don't recommend the EH in this application. :( I've put about 10 hrs on the EH 6V6 so far in the HRDlx, watching the tubes the whole time, and so far, so good. This must be the most extreme test of these tubes, and maybe risky, pushing it beyond its limits. But they sound great.... :o

Both the GT and JJ sounded much cleaner, and more like a 6L6 clean glassy sound, without as much breakup as the EH. While these two tubes both had a little 6V6 flavor (touch of breakup), neither had the creamy warm breakup of a 6V6 when driven. The breakup was much more edgy/aggressive like a 6L6. The sound of either of these tubes was quite different than that of a typical 6V6.

pretty sure rectifier is a 5u4, only pushed amp to around 7 , amp seems to have a great amount of headroom just starting to sag a little and slightly breakup. amp seems to have a really good glassy rounded tone very natural and warm. I think the weber speaker keeps it cleaner longer rated at 50 watts it is very efficient, exactly what I wanted easily maintaining solid bass notes at higher volumes.

When you said "5UR4", i wasn't sure what you had.

Sounds more like a 6L6 amp than a 6V6, but if you like it that's cool. :)

when you say more like a 6l6 amp do you mean that it stays clean longer? I really have not pushed it that hard yet, I like to get it to just start breakin then throw a litlte dirt in for the nasty stuff. only tried single coils so far and she really sings.

Yes, getting clean on a DR up to 7 is unusual, as they are known for early breakup (6V6).

With single-coils, the DR (and the re-issues) starts to honk and compress around "6". With a LP, SG, etc that volume setting generally drops by a notch.

I gigged with my '66 DR last night and the volume was on 5,it was mic'ed and on the threshold of breakup,a good clean fat tone, nice and warm.
To crank one, they do start to get dirty about 6...so do many of my vintage Fenders,...that seems to be a good number to shoot for if trying to control the distortion level...also the numbers 5-6-7 are a good range for the bass and treble tone positions....over the years I've stayed in that area and get the classic sounds....on the amps in the 22-40 watt range.

Those platforms are really the best for wringing the most realistic vintage tones at a volume that won't melt faces in the first five rows. Using a TR or a Showman in a small-to-medium club is akin to committing involuntary manslaughter.

   I thought that when I was typing my post...there's a couple of people that I could "accidently" knock off if I could get them in a club with a TR headed their direction.

The "mojo" really begins once you log fifty or so hours on that speaker.

Rawk on!

Only got about 12 hours so far, might have to stay up late to log a few more hours. I took a chance buying this amp and it needed some work but let me tell you it was worth it. By far this is my favorite , these amps really are something and worth every penny. Not sure why anyone would like the old oxford really is night and day in comparison to the new weber.
