Hello, all. I am new here. I'd like to ask for help now, and hopefully be of help to someone else later.

I just bought ($100 from CL) what appears to be a BF Bassman 2x12 Cab. It needs to be cleaned up. I've done alot of reading online about this and think it is an original, but it's been modified. The back MDF panel does not have tolex, and has been painted white both sides. The inside of the box is painted white, but I can still tell that the box is fingerjointed pine and the front baffle is MDF. The baffle doesnt seem right because the center cleat is not centered. I think somebody made a new baffle and didn't center the cleat? There are pencil markings on the white paint around both speakers, as if someone was marking where to cut the new holes. No insulation, no tag or ID plate. The Fender logo seems to be glued on, but I can see the correct 3 mounting holes on the inside.

The real question is the speakers. They appear to be matched 12" ceramic, but one cone has twice as many ribs as the other. I'd like to know what speakers I have. The only marking (I'll post pics soon) is on the magnet in black ink:

T-6274
12TU3140
91 7834 D

I've researched this and am still nowhere. Anybody have any ideas about the speakers or cabinet?

Thanks.

You might start your assessment by determining precisely what cabinet it is, and when it was made.

What are the exterior dimensions and what is the center-to-center distance between the threaded bushings on the top of the cab which are used to anchor the amp head to it?

Thanks. 20 x 32 x 11 1/2 w/ 23" O.C. should be a BF Bassman. I'd like to add pictures, but don't understand how to attach them. Can you explain how that's done?

Your measurements do indeed coincide with those for a small-box Bassman enclosure. Unfortunately the crude "interior decorating" job will preclude any possibility of determining the cab's exact age, though the exterior cosmetics may yield clues. The original speaker complement would be either a pair of Oxford 12T8's ('63 through early '65) or a pair of Jensen C12N's (mid '65 until the design was discontinued in late '66 or early '67). If they're still present, the tilt-back legs will be stamped "PAT. PEND." and one of them may also be marked with a serial number. Restoring the baffle and center partition pose no insurmountable problems although removing the offending white paint may be a real chore. As for your speakers, I'd need to see some pics of the frames, magnet structures, and cones to even hazard a guess as to their pedigree.

I hope this works.

Hey, it worked! Well, you can see the "what the hell?" white paint now. I'd appreciate any comment or help.

Thanks

The cabinet and grill cloth look to be of the 65-66 as does the glued on Fender Logo. The inside of the cabinet though painted does look to be built the way Fender did it back then.

The speakers are a total mystery. None of those numbers match anything from any speaker code that I could find. Are there any other numbers or any on the rim of the speaker?

Here is the website I used to try and track down the speaker codes and this is a really good site, I have always been able to find a speaker manufacturer on this one:

http://www.webervst.com/codes.html

Maybe now that there are pictures, Arjay will come along and be able to identify the speakers by sight vs the codes given.

FWIW

I know...that white paint idea must've happened in the wee hours of the morning.

I can't find anybody or any website that has a guess about the type of speakers. I've taken them out of the cab to inspect, and found no other info. A mystery.

The speaker frames are reminescent of several Rola 12-inch types but the numbers do not jive. Possibly something "off-shore" (Fanes? Goodwyns?).

The mystery continues......
