My tech said that my 64 vibro champ took a flat cord but he didn't have any. I'm wanting the plug in switched to a grounded 3 prong, because now it shocks me if I touch something that has reversed polarity from my amp. Where could I get a proper cord?

here's our conversation.

It takes a flat cord, and i don't know if anyone makes a 3 prong cord that would fit. It has or uses a flat ground relief. If it hums or shocks you, flit the cord plug around in the socket. Did it shock you after i worked on it? Seems the only way it could shock you is if you touched something else that was reverse polarity. Like another amp plugged in,or a mic etc.

A power cable intended for a computer CPU will work just fine. They're grounded,3-conductor AWG18 -- perfect for a Fender amp. Merely cut off the molded IEC plug, strip back the jacket to expose the three wires, tin the ends of the leads, then solder it up in the appropriate manner. About five bucks at any Lowe's, Home Depot, or Ace Hardware.

Maybe you should find a different tech. It's common to have to modify or replace the strain relief grommet (what he calls a "ground relief") on old amps to fit a modern 3-conductor cable. You either replace the grommet or you enlarge the opening (with a razor knife or by melting it with a soldering iron). If he can't figure out how to do that I'm not sure I'd trust him to do the 3-prong conversion properly. (Done improperly, a 3-prong conversion can actually make the amp more dangerous.)

Just a guess -- this is one of those techs who doesn't believe in replacing old electrolytic caps until after they blow up?

Yeah...seems like the "tech" quit learning in the '60s about grounds.... :? what he described about flipping the plug and not getting shocked went out with waxed flattop haircuts, and penny loafers...no offense to anyone still sporting that style.
Put that 3 prong on there!

Find a real tech .
I replace often those 2 ac cord for a 3 prong and never had trouble to find the right one. Almost all the time a small round one do the job very well.

I use SJO or SJT 18-AWG round PVC insulated three-prong power cords. They seem to stand up well to outdoor use. And heat, sun, water-resistant, etc. Use appropropriate strain-relief (grommet) with the cord.
