You're totally right Arjay, and it sounds great! It breaks up a little later than I expected, above 7, but sounds sweet when it does, and its not as bright as my DRRI. I'll try to get a photo of the soldering on that tranny when I have a chance.

The power transformer in my Vibrolux is a Triad, when most sources referenced state that Fender had quit using them around '60,going with Schumacher...and a guy who researches the Brown amps questioned it since he followed that timeline,I sent him some detailed pics of the transformer and he said it looked like every Triad he had inspected.
It isn't marked "Triad" but the stamp on it is different than what you usually see,but every part if it visible, looks Triad.
I'm like Arjay, these things are interesting, but the vintage sound you get and the tone are what matters, and to keep them "roadworthy" as he said....everytime I gig with my amps, somebody asks me about them and the year models, and you just don't see everyone using these old gems.

In my case, such inquiries are usually followed up by an offer to purchase.

Perhaps *someday*.

(if the requisite number of C-notes are waggled in my face......)

I've seen you mention that you're known for playing vintage amps in your area RJ...that's great and it's good that people who want to hear great music and pure tone can hear it from you....pretty much the same with me and my amps, and my son's band also,we're educating the other musicians on what's really cool. 8)

Cooler still is that you can play for a week or more and not use the same amp each night.

My boys never know WTF I'm gonna show up with.

 I know, that's the first thing the bass player and drummer do,is come out to see what's going to get unloaded....since I've only sat in with them for a month or two and have used a couple of amps twice, they haven't seen everything yet.
me and my son discuss what we're going to use before hand and go over a few things like keys and chord changes because I don't get to their practices, and he has been jamming with me since he was about 10 or 11 years old,and is now 26....it's second nature with us.

Thanks RJ,he's a great player,it's really good to be able to play with him, there's no jealousy or competition,so the music comes off pretty good. :D

I have a 13 year old piano player coming up...we have jammed a couple of times but his confidence level is a bit low. I hope that time and interest will allow us to play more and more. By the way, I am no SRV, but I like jamming at the house and it sounds much better with a piano in the mix :)

I know we're getting off topic but we're just chatting till the OP comes back.
Beaubs....two of my three sons play, the one mentioned here is the youngest, the middle son plays a different style and we haven't jammed much over the years.
The one I play with has never lacked in confidence or talent, but he has never been arrogant or egotistical, which I'm proud to see...so we have always been able to play very well together, really,he's better than I am in some ways, and being able to just sit back, play a groove with the bass and drums and let him take flight is the most fun....lots of people who come to hear us have grown up with him and seen us together many times over the years....it's fun.

Yes -- let us know how it goes.

What cab are you using with that Tremolux?

I'm using a no name 1x12 cab with an 8 ohm tone tubby hempcone alnico. It sounds nice! I looked on-line for those 1x10 tone ring cabs these were used with, but they seem like they're hard to find. You guys might know, what's the idea behind the tone ring?

The tone-ring baffle (actually known as a "Helmholtz radiator") tunes the cabinet to a specific resonant frequency based on the size of the driver, its frequency bandwidth, and the available interior volume of the enclosure. Leo designed three of these -- 1 x 10, 1 x 12, 1 x 15 -- to be used respectively with the then-new-in-1960 piggyback editions of the Tremolux, Bassman, and Showman (the Bandmaster would also be added to this line-up after the 3 x 10 combo configuration was abandoned). The operating principle was based on theories used to design high-end/high-performance hi-fi speaker systems. The cabs were expensive to build relative to a conventional bass-reflex type with a single tuned port and all of them save for the 1 x 15 used with the Showman were discontinued after a brief two-year run, to be replaced by a matched pair of drivers mounted to a standard baffle board.

Here's an interior view of a tone-ring enclosure......

Image

The cab featured an inner and outer baffle, with the speaker mounted in a recessed stamped-steel bezel. Spacers between the baffle boards allowed the reverse waves from the rear of the speaker cone to escape to the front, thus reinforcing the bass and mid frequencies to increase the cab's overall efficiency.

HTH

The Vibrolux in my pic currently has a Tone Tubby alnico speaker and it sounds awesome.

RJ...is there a big difference in the tone ring cabs and the conventional cabs?...maybe not, since they were discontinued so soon,I've wondered about that myself, but have no experience with them.
