Hello, have a all original cricuit board on my 67 deluxe reverb amp repair man who I have known for 32 years says he wants to change several resistors (about 12) that have drifted well out of specs what are your thoughts.

Significant value drift is a legitimate reason to replace them. If they fail completely (a distinct possibility, given the amp's age), you're likely to face some catastrophic and very expensive damage.

Thanks Arjay, I agree as I will be using this amp on a regular basis.

Routine maintenance and servicing at regular intervals will keep that amp on the road for a long long time.

I'm currently gigging with amps that were made in 1964. They've yet to let me down.

The same happened in my '66 Princeton Reverb. A resistor being too resistant  so bias was too low. The printed value on the resistor was correct, but when we measured it, it wasn't.

So yes, go for it.

Cheers

I use my vintage amps also, and like Arjay said, they haven't let me down, but they do need taking care of.
People who just buy them to look at and collect dust can keep them original if they want, but I would rather play through them, and to my way of thinking, that's what they were made for.

Few guitarists are impressed when some jerk-off at a GC boasts about all the vintage gear he's warehoused in his music room that never sees a stage or band riser.

I use Allen-Bradley resistors, in the signal path, to replace OEM OOT resistors. I find they maintain the original tone and are reliable. Versus many off-shore made types.

You'll find vintage Fender amps uses many of the same value resistors in the range of model amps and years of manufacturer. So, you really don't need to stock up on a bazillion different values.

If you need a specific value, I like Parts Connexion:

Thanks for the input, amp has been serviced with new filter caps some vintage tubes and several resistors,. It sounds great other than a tired( BUZZING ON LOW NOTES) speaker. New speaker on its way I cant wait any longer... do you think when an amp is restored to specs it sounds like it did when new? I think people get used to what there amp sounds like out of spec and then have work done and immediately think it does not sound as good because it sounds like it should vs what it use to.

With new filter caps and power tubes--- was amp's idle bias checked? And adjusted.

Yes, one gets use to a vintage amp, as it slowly changes through the years. Much like how guitars sometimes change tone as they age. And once set back to original (much as possible)--- the tone you get may not be close to want you had. Give it a good 25-30 hour "Ferrari Test Drive." Then see what you think.

I'd be curious as to how much of that "buyer's remorse" subsequent to an overhaul is actually a figment of one's imagination -- driven by the power of suggestion provided by forum-fueled mass hysteria. Yes, drifted components *may* affect tone. But is it really as significant of a change as conventional wisdom tells us? And is that change even "good" as it relates to tone?

Hmm......

bias was set and power tubes matched as close as possible. I never heard this amp until the work was done.the filter caps were oozing and I was not about to fire it up. I never had a deluxe only a 67 princeton reverb thats what got me started on this fender thing. All I can say is these older fender amps sound incredible each in ther own way. when I get my new speaker in I think I might try running these two in stereo .

I frequently run a tandem-pair of Fender amps on stage. If they're separated by six to eight feet, some neat pseudo-stereo effects are possible when using an A/B/Y footswitch and two independent signal chains, each with their own effects.

Now thats what im talking about! Hey Arjay what do you use for a a b box, ive been using a old boss stereo chorus for a very long time to split my signal. I used to run a jcm800 half stack along with a jmp half stack back in the day( my back still hurts) Its really amazing that I only realized how good these fender amps are within the past 5 years. when I plug into these amps I here the sounds and tone of so many old songs that I never heard before. Its a real blast from the past.....
