Have the Pilot light jewels on Fender amps always been red? On page 198 of Fender Amps, The First 50 Years by Teagle and Sprung, shows a Vibroverb, Deluxe Reverb, and a Princeton Reverb with Green Jewels. The reason I ask is my '64 Princeton came with a Green one, with the nickel surround, not the chrome ones like the new ones you can buy.

Seems to me I remember seeing some green ones way back when, but not sure if they were original back then. Teagle and Sprung's book covers knobs, tolexs, grill cloths, handles, name plates, etc, but never mentions the jewel colors.

Any idea if it is original?

Thanks in advance.

I think they've always been red, though the bezel is a common industry-standard size and many folks (including myself) have changed colors to suit the mood. I've "liberated" many nickel-bezeled jewels from military gear that was scheduled to be scrapped including white, clear, amber, blue, green, red, frosted red, frosted green, and a weird ultra-violet one that came from the cockpit of an F-101 Voodoo.

Thanks Arjay...You would think after working aircraft maintainers for 28 years I would have thought this through...I bought the amp from a T-33 Crew Chief! You are probably right, he probably did replace it with a green jewel.

And now that you reminded me of these possibilities, I do remember some of the avionics test station equipment had these same type of jewels on them in green, red, clear, and amber...guess I need to go take my dose of Ginko Bilbo!

I so hate getting old and since my knees are already gone, I guess my memory is next on the list!

On a good note, I like the green look on the blackface though!

I have blues on my SFTR and HRDlx. I believe a green will go nicely on my Vibro Champ XD. It's fun to play around with the different colors. If you do not have a source for recycled bezels, www.cedist.com has them for about $2 each.

Two bucks is a pretty righteous price, Rob.

Arjay, I get something out of looking at your amp herd pic almost every time I see it. Usually it's just a big woodie but this time it's also an idea. What year is your DR? Did you recover it yourself or is that an aftermarket cabinet? What's the story there?

It's a custom-built cab housing a fifteen-inch speaker, specifically a JBL D130F. I'm currently building another which will have drip-edge silverface cosmetics......

Arjay,

What is the Pro Amp that you show in the herd? Would that be considered a "Pro Reverb"? Any details would be helpful....

They've been red as far back as I remember. Other types of equipment I've owned were red too. I guess it just stands out. My light is blue on my Egnater and I've already forgotten to turn the amp off from standby more than once.

The brown "Pro Amp" is one of my "what-if" repro's. It's actually a '68 Bandmaster chassis in a custom-built 2 x 10 combo cab. The blackface Pro Amp is exactly as depicted -- a 100% original 1964 non-reverb 1 x 15 model......the oldest amp currently in my collection, which I frequently pair with the Vibroverb for some neat pseudo-stereo effects. The following year this Pro version would be superceded by the 2 x 12 AA165 combo with reverb.

Reb those are two very righteous blackface amps! WOW! A Pro Reverb and a Deluxe Reverb... how the heck do you decide which to play?

Thanks so much guys!
I play them all,for different places and at home...I've been playing with my son's band and the sound level is pretty high, this weekend the Pro Reverb gets the ride to perform.
The Pro is the loudest, but everyone of them sound great, but these two '66's are the old reliables, they will do the job at hand anywhere I play, the DR was my first vintage Fender amp when I returned to the brand after using Marshalls and others,I kept hearing the Fender sound in my head after using them early in my playing career, and as far as I'm concerned, nothing else will do for me.
