Looking at possibly building a cab just for at home jammin' and can't help but think this would be a killer sound!? Looking at getting a Weber 15F150 in either 30 or 50 watt. Leaning on the 30 watt for an earlier bluesy break up but would like to hear from you all! Any advice on cab size would be appreciated, still up in the air as to open or closed back. Would be nice to have the punch bass sound of a closed back but don't want to sacrifice anything. I play mainly blues and classic rock via strat

I periodically wire up my '68 Bronco (same chassis as a Vibro Champ) to a Dual Showman cab, loaded with a pair of 15-inch JBL D130F's. It's ballsy......real ballsy.

Keep in mind, for optimum output and safety your Champ wants to see a 4-ohm load. Plan your speaker array accordingly.

Seventy-five watts RMS, each.

A fifteen -- any fifteen -- will enhance a guitar amp's bottom end so if you're designing a purpose-built 1 x 15 enclosure, I'd make it a semi-open back with dimensions of (roughly) 24" x 18" x 12". Sealed-back bass-reflex enclosures are more efficient but they're also very directional as far as projection goes. The open-back infinite-baffle cab radiates better, most notably indoors where the room itself acts like a folded-horn baffle to increase the volumetric efficiency and dispersion.

Power is a relative thing. The LOUDEST ( I mean Concert Hall loud and BEST dynamic hi-fi system I ever heard was a friend's DIY Klipsch Folded JBL Hartsfield Horn speakers using two LE15A per side and one monster 375 horn dirver with DIY birch horn per speaker.

Driven by a DIY Audio Note 2A3 (3 watts, per channel) monobloc amps. If you have to ask the price...

Curious as to how you came up with these dimensions? It'd be great to build a cab with removable baffles and a 1/2-3/4 back that can also be closed up. Any sites you can steer me towards for a "how to"? I think I've really come into the ball park with this champ (and my pedals), but I'm sure will always wonder what a 12" sounds like, closed back,etc...

thanks for the insight guys!

ps I also have a '66 Pacemaker EA50 (8ohm) would a 4ohm Weber not match up well enough for this amp? is there a workaround?

Heh heh heh......I'm the forum's "mad scientist".

I've experimented with many amp/speaker/cabinet combinations over the decades and I have a pretty good idea how a system will perform. My "calculations" are based on various loudspeaker handbooks and personal experience building my own cabs. The dimensions I cited previously just happen to mirror the custom-designed enclosure I build for a "Spankmaster Reverb" conversion -- that's a DRRI chassis in a taller cab designed to accommodate a 15-inch speaker. I'm building my sixth one as we speak.

 okay I'm drooling now.....man that princeton combo must be the ultimate bedroom/recording amp

Just so you know I in no way was questioning your cred, was just looking for a frame of reference to seek out more info

Since I have you here....have you noticed any tonal difference between mdf and various solid woods? if so could you recommend a substrate? appreciate it!

You should question the cred of someone whom you personally do not know -- there are plenty of "poseurs" on the internet (including this very forum).

Personally, I build original-style Fender-spec enclosures -- same materials, same methods. Pine is an extremely lightweight and resonant wood, excellent for cab shells. Up until the debut of the piggyback models in 1960, all Fender baffle boards were plywood. Subsequent to that, MDF became the standard. Properly cared for, it will last as long as "real" wood but there are some unique scenarios where plywood may be preferred. I've used both as the occasion warrants and never had a second thought or a problem with the decision. MDF should never be used for a cab shell though -- sonically, it's totally lifeless and it increases the weight of any given structure by at least 50%.

Found a 10 year old Fender Sidekick Bassman locally for $100. Any idea on what the cab is made of and if it's worth buying and swap'n speakers with? I suppose I'd have to also router out a flap in the back as well to make it a convertible

Probably particle-board.

For a hundred bucks I certainly don't see much "redeeming social value".

JMOOC......

In that case, saw a hole in your closet door and bolt a speaker to the reverse side -- it'll sound just about as good.
