I just switched my '67 off after a couple of hours with a flametop Les Paul. For some variety, I disconnected the internal speaker and plugged the amp into my 8-ohm Dual Showman cab with a pair of JBL 15's. Dimed, it sounded very Duane-ish......close to the sonic nirvana one hears on "Trouble No More" or "Black-hearted Woman" from the Allman Brothers' first album.

"They're not making these anymore."

I've wondered what amps the Brothers used in the studio on the first and second albums...Duane did use Fenders earlier in the studio, and I've seen a pic from his funeral where there's several Fender BF amps in the background,so I know they had them around, wouldn't surprise me that some of the recorded songs were Fender driven.
I've been palying my '66 Pro Reverb all day...no gig tonight, but it's going to the next one...next Sat. night....which also happens to be the 40th anniversary of Duane Allman's death.

Ayup......I played mine for close to six hours this afternoon. Strat, Les Paul, even my 12-string. Heavenly!

:D

Arjay, Don't know if you already answered this. But, how would you describe the "Spankmaster" tone with its JBL 15-inch versus the standard issue 12-inch loaded DR?

Thanks!

More punch and a skosh "throatier" is my observation. An efficient 12 (like a JBL, Altec, EV, etc) can eliminate the "flab" factor that many complain about, and it's certainly a worthwhile upgrade to be sure (I absolutely love my '68 Deluxe Reverb with its D120F). But the "Spankmaster" conversion with its 15-inch D130F moves significantly more air at any given volume setting than the stock DR or DRRI -- the difference between 113 square inches of radiating cone area with the 12-inch speaker and nearly 177 square inches with a fifteen -- roughly a 30% increase.

The highs remain sparkly (hey......it's a D-series JBL) while the mids seem ever-so-slightly enhanced. The bass is robustly clean and articulate.

Arjay, Have you ever tried the JBL K120's? I have my TRRI loaded with them and 7581A output tubes. And I think this combo is actual brighter, more bass, & LOUDER than my old 1965 BFTR that was loaded with D120F's and running Sylvania STR-415's.

Thanks!

Yeah -- I have K120's in my TRRI too. Plus a pair mated to my Princeton "Dual Porch Weasel" piggyback conversion. Sonically, they're pretty close to the original D-series.

When I bought my '66 DR about 15 years ago,it had a K120 in it,it sounded good,a little too bright for my taste at the time,so I replaced it with a Weber for more of a vintage Jensen sound.
I've thought about getting the JBL back out and trying it in something again after seeing y'all mention them so often.
