I know you're not gonna believe this, but the local C/L actually has a guy offering to perform this "service":
http://baltimore.craigslist.org/msg/2659084725.html
Now, I've never thought of a drill press as a standard modification tool, but just what exactly do you think would happen if you performed this procedure on one of your Strats? Other than being run out of the county, that is... :?

I think its entirely possible there is some merit to the idea. Not that I'm about to hack up any of my own instuments, mind you. Warmoth sells chambered bodies with the implied purpose being a change in tone and sustain. I noticed the holes in that Strat were not placed with any thought to symmetry which makes me wonder how the decision was made on where to drill.

BTW .... ummm... this is the amp forum.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Why not just buy a basswood-bodied Jackson or Charvel......?

Can't find the article but Dan Erlewine of Stew Mac did this on a Mosrite that was just getting too heavy for him to play; it was in a past issue of Guitar Player (like 10-12 years ago). Not my cup of tea, but it made for a cool look, since he also repainted the guitar afterwards.

I'm with Arjay - just get a lighter body, or get a chambered body from Warmoth or Stew Mac.

Yeah, I've seen guitars marketed new with holes pierced through them in the past. What I thought funny was the implied claim that the drill-pressing procedure could turn a Chinese Squier Strat into a '69 Thinline Tele, and the fact that the drilled holes seem kinda randomly placed and amateurishly done.

BTW .... ummm... this is the amp forum.

I know, but I like you guys on the Vintage Amp Page the BEST! Don't have any intention of actually doing this, but thought some might find it amusing. :D :D

The CL poster did that Swiss Cheese mod to a Chinese Squier...... So I guess - who cares. Its just a cheap Chinese Squier. Anyone really willing to do that to their American Standard or vintage baby.

My son wanted to try his hand at modding a guitar over the summer. We found a used Epi LP Special for $70 on CL. He had fun tearing it apart, sanding down the body, installed some new P-90 Phat Cats by Mr. Duncan, and doing his own paint job. He learned a lot..... had some fun. It actually sounds and plays really nice. Now he wants to try his hand at a flying V style kit. Seems like a great Xmas gift for him.

" BTW .... ummm... this is the amp forum. "

You aren't suggesting to drill out a few holes in that cab or Twin Reverb are you?

Nah, not the same thing :) I would never change a thing about that SR... I could convert the VVRI instead

I suppose you'll just have to take a hole saw to your ash-bodied '78 hardtail Strat instead if you want to get "that" tone. I have a set of blades that go up to two inches which I'll be happy to loan you.
