My brother-in-law told me that Gere was selling a majority of his collection. The auction was yesterday at Christies.

Here are the results - with photos of the items (106 items)

Looks like he preferred Strats. (nice looking '54 in the collection) The amps are interesting in what he had and maybe what he didn't have. I like that he had a Silvertone 1481 (early 1960's "champ" from Danelectro). A '74 SF Princeton Reverb went for $938.

Everything seemed to sell within the normal range. Seems the provenance had no effect on price.

More important to this story.... I can tell my wife that "dreamy Richard Gere" also collected guitars and amp, so it has to be an acceptable hobby.

I didn't even know he could play the guitar. Any amplified Gerbils for sale?

Sorry the Devil made me say it.

Yeah - I don't think the urban legend will ever go away.

His wife suggested he clear it out. From what I read, he kept some items - but cleaned house otherwise. Proceeds from the auction ($900K plus) are going/went to charity.

Its interesting/fun to get a peek at someone's collection and what their interests are. From what I read, he was more interested in the quality, tone, playability of anything he added to the collection. The collection is pretty broad.... its not like it focused on Fenders or pre-war Gibsons/Martins, but just a variety of items that he wanted play.

As I stated before, I thought it was interesting provenance (his ownership) didn't seem to affect the final price.

I also found Gere's collection much more interesting than say the Clapton or Slash auctions, which include items they might never have played or even cared about. The latter being more about them cleaning out storage units than something they actually collected and cared about.

I know some RN's that work at Cedars-Sinai Hospital. And everyone has to write a legal oath not to say anything about anyone, anymore. HIPAA isn't good enough. The 8th floor (celebrity floor) has better security than the LA County Jail Ward.

Still, a lot of famous folks go to St John's, in Santa Monica. Think that they have a better Med staff, in general. Cedars in kinda over-rated. IMHO, of course.

Boy, I hope Gere has more talent than Steven Seagal. That one Blues album he made is literally a killer. :P

Can it really get any worst than Shatner doing Rocketman?

Unfortunately - it seems record companies think just because someone is "talented" in the performing arts, that they could be successful in the musical arts.

Nice short vid of G.E. Smith and the head of Christie's Music Department talking about two early 1954 Strats that were in the collection. Both with serial #'s below 1000.

Shatner's vocal talents are only slightly worse than his acting ability!
