Well, he got back to me, and I went and got the SFDR. I am one happy camper. This thing is sweet. The move from the deville to this is like walking out of the mud. Thanks for the help guys. BTW I got it for $750.

Yes, you'll need a remote hosting service such as Photobucket (preferred 9 to 1), Flickr, Vendio, etc.

Well, as happy as I am with my new acquisition, I'm always looking for more. I think it may be a sickness. I was looking at the tubes, and the majority are JJ's, one Sovatek, one I can't id, and a fender. First question: is it strange that there are a couple of randoms in there or is that planned? Next, I have read that JJ's are "dark", is this true, and if I was looking for brighter/cleaner, where should I look? I must say that I am pretty clueless when it comes to these amps, so can anyone let me in as to what each of the tubes in this amp do. I understand the power tubes, and the rectifier, but are all of the other 7 preamp tubes? Thanks everybody for all of the help so far, ya'll have been invaluable.

Here's the schematic for your amp, MC......

http://web.archive.org/web/200805161018 ... _schem.pdf

Note that there are six pre-amp tubes. Each of these are what's known as a "twin triode", essentially two independent tubes within a single glass envelope. And each of the twin sections of each tube performs a specific task. The V1 tube as an example provides the 1st and 2nd gain stages of the normal channel, just as V2 likewise does the same with the vibrato channel. V3 is used to buffer a portion of the amplified input signal from V2 then drive it into the reverb tank while V4 recovers this "wet" signal and amplifies it again to compensate for the insertion loss of the reverb tank. V5 is the oscillator and driver for the tremolo circuit. Finally, V6 is the phase inverter stage which discriminates and separates the input signal's sinusoidal waveform into halves (the positive and negative portions of the signal) then sends these halves to one of each of the power tubes for final amplification (for this reason, it's desirable to have a tube with balanced transconductance in this position).

HTH

Thanks, Reb.

And by and large, that's the same pre-amp architecture used in all vintage Fender dual-channel combos with reverb and trem, and their various re-issued incarnations.

Arjay already gave a great explanation of what each tube does... nothing strange about having different tubes in there, you can try different preamp tubes til you find the ones that suit your playing style and the tone you're trying to achieve.

If you plan to replace what's in there I say go for it! I'm not a fan of most JJ tubes... I tried a complete set in my DRRI, only tube left is the rectifier. NOS tubes are going to be your best option, but costly... NOS RCA 6V6 are the best tubes out there IMO. For new production I've been extremely happy with TAD tubes. Their 6V6GT-STR are great power tubes, I love the way they sound in my DRRI!

So are their preamp tubes (7025). I also like the Mullard new production 12AX7, but they can be noisy due to the larger plates. For V3 (reverb) and V6 (phase inverter) consider the NOS Mullard 12AT7, make sure you get a balanced tube for V6

JAN 12AT7 tubes are also great in your amp. Good luck!
