Stratele & Arjay & Neo,

Yes, sorry about the misinformation. Stratele is correct.

thanks all. Amp is with my guy who is diagnosing the heater wires/pilot lamp and should know soon.

Other thought - after playing through the Warehouse Speakers G12C, I'll be selling my 2 Weber ceramic California 12's with the aluminum dustcaps in my Bandmaster combo (in my signature) -- there's no comparison.

Comparing the sound of two different speakers in two entirely different types of enclosures is not an objective comparision. You should tread cautiously before rendering any decision to replace one driver for another.

totally agree and please know I'm not making this decision just on a closed-back vs. open back cab.

I have two friends whom I listen to about tone (one of whom rebuilt the Showman); both have auditioned 20+ speakers in open-back Fender combos. The Warehouse G12C beat all other speakers for them except the Kendrick Black Frame 12's at twice the price. Had I not gotten feedback from them and their Warehouse-equipped Fenders (Deluxe and Pro Reverbs, both blackface) I'd be cautious.

Test the WGC speakers from your Showman cab in the Bandmaster combo before tossing the Weber's into the dumpster. Let your own ears decide.

good thought.

would just taking the back off the Bandmaster cab simulate this vs having to undo the whole thing?

Don't worry, the Webers won't be going into the dumpster; they'll find a nice home on eBay.

Yes, but the 2 x 12 combo cab will resonate slightly differently from the Showman enclosure with its back removed (likely not enough to make any significant difference though).

Update:

Just got the amp back from my guy who rebuilt the Bandmaster. His notes:

Findings
cold solder joints on tube socket filament pins
Broken 1.5K ohm resistor on V6 pin 1
Power cord wiring: Neutral to fuse, hot to switch; Fuse+ switch should be to hot
Suspect solder joints on circuit board and tube sockets

Parts:
1 x 1.5K ohm carbon comp resistor

Labor
Removed chassis, inspected chassis interior
Rewired power cord connections to fuseholder & switch
Replaced faulty resistor
Resoldered all solder joints on main circuit board, bias board, filter cap board and power tube sockets
Adjusted power tube bias to 37ma @450VDC = 55% of max at idle
reassembled and tested amp

Only $50, so no worries.

Fired it up at lunch with a strat direct and sounded great! will continue to play test as we have some time before our next gig.

$50! You got a good deal. Hope that amp stays healthy so years to come.

"Neutral to fuse, hot to switch; Fuse+ switch should be to hot" All dang Fender amps were wired this way, when they had two-line power to wall wiring. And that crazy ground switch. All should be pulled, with three-prong wiring and hot to fuse (as the tech said). And the "death cap" disabled.

+1

Fifty bucks is a square deal. And it sounds like you have a very consciencious tech.

Rewiring the primary power circuit should be mandatory for all vintage Fender amps. I prefer leaving the original parts in situ to preserve the vintage vibe and merely wire around them. The "ground" (ie: polarity) switch can sometimes be "recycled" for other uses. I used the one in my '65 Princeton Reverb to give the amp a standby function. It could also be configured to perform the role of an output impedance selector when using an aftermarket output tranny with multiple secondary taps.

If your pilot light goes OFF , this must be a power transformer problem . Not the transformer itself but solder on their fillements wires and like Retroverbial said.

Chek also solder on the primary ; on fuse holder ,AC power chord.

If the amp was " rebuilt" chance are bad soder or forget to solder.

It is not a big trouble to fix

$50 is a good price but if he rebuilt the amp before this work in not warranty ?

The guy who rebuilt the amp lives on the other coast; shipping it there and back would have been $150 easily. Given the price I paid for the rebuild, more than happy to pay $50 to have a local person take a look at it.

I'm lucky to have amp friends who are extremely reasonable on prices.

Sorry if that wasn't clear.

The guy who rebuilt my Bandmaster 3 years ago is in Redondo Beach, near me.

The guy who rebuilt my Showman this year is outside of Boston, MA, 3000 miles away.
