I am trying to educate myself on these great litttle amps 8) . I was wondering if there was a " favorite" or more coveted model of tweed era princeton (5c2, 5d2, TV front, Wide front etc..) and why :?:

I think most everyone considers the narrow panel tweeds the best, they were the latest in the evolution of Leo's amp refinement in the '50s,and seem to be the high mark of that period.

"Favorite" is tough to define. I agree with Reb that most people like the narrow panels. But the evolution of tone during those tweed years allows you to get/experience a variety of different tones. I think the early amps were a bit dark in tone, which can be just as satisfying.

I like this vid.... they do a nice demo thru 3 different tweed Supers

That TV front Princeton will should be quite unique to your ears.

Can't wait to see the photos when you get it back!!!

Frankly, I never cared for the tone from any of the tweeds (which is why I don't own one). But I like the visual vibe of the TV-front versions.

Here's a quick pic of it. Back from the shop. Notice the "dimple" in the cloth is pretty much gone.Image

A fine specimen of preserved history!

And not nearly as cosmetically-rough as I imagined it to be.

Yeah, I could blame the cheap cellphone camera but in all honestly, I'm no photographer LOL! However, proper lighting does wonders!

Decent digital cameras are now quite affordable.

And the three most important aspects of shooting decent pics are: focus, lighting, and depth-of-field. Decent image-editing software is also a big help.

Arjay, Let's just say one causes the dogs to run for cover when cranked to "12." And the other causes dogs to start howling, while "cranked" to 12.

Maybe, new caps are needed?

The best Tweed amp I ever owned was a 59 Harvard...it had a 10 inch Alnico Jensen speaker, two 6V6s and a 5Y3...I still kick myself everyday for letting that one go. It had a great tone and was a solid 8.5 condition and sounded absolutly awesome when cranked up to 12 :!: :!: :!:

I know Arjay doesn't care for the sound of the tweeds but the tone of those Deluxe and smaller amps had it in spades...they are one trick pony's but WOW on that one trick!

FWIW

We've all stepped on our dicks at some point.

But at least now we know better.

Yeah...the ONLY consolation is it helped to later fund the purchase of my '64 Princeton, which in alot ways is somewhat similiar (2-6V6s, two 12aX7s, with the GZ34 in place of the 5Y3GT)...so I don't kick myself too hard!
