A Super Reverb may be more amp than you need -- it's a large-and-heavy professional-grade piece of gear, very loud and very powerful. If you're gigging out it's a great platform, but for informal jams and occasional open-mic nights a Deluxe Reverb might be a better choice.

Something to think about anyway......

I have thought about getting a DR, but my budget will only allow the purchase of a RI, and everyone says I need to get the real deal. I'm only considering the SR because its within budget, and if he wants flight instruction there will be no outlay of cash. Do you think the DR will have enough clean headroom with a Chicago style blues band?

That depends on how loud your "Chicago style blues band" plays.

I often gig with this (ahem)......slightly modified Deluxe Reverb re-issue and it's always gotten the job done.

We mic our instruments though so the amp is never drowned out.

The amp chassis is a first-year edition (1993). I put it in a larger cab and installed a 15-inch JBL D130F.

The guitar is "home-made" as well.

Regards,
Roger

Nice! I played a DRRI at GC with my guitar, and I thought it sounded pretty good. It did have some weird low feedback issue going on with the reverb, and I read somewhere this is kind of common. My dealer says he will sell me a new one 950.00 out the door, and I,m tempted, but more than a few guys have told me that if i did a side by side comparison of the RI and a vintage model there would be a drastic difference. Do the modifications "fix" this? at that point I would suppose the only concern would be reliability which may not be an issue as I'm sure I won't be around in another forty or fifty yrs anyhow..lol Another option i am considering is to buy a reissue off of Craigslist, and then having it rewired as a point to point from someone like these guys..

It seems like the newer the amp, the more problems they have (especially among the re-issue models). Both my Twin Reverb and Deluxe Reverb are older re-issues from the early '90s......no RoHS-compliant solder, no goofy cages around the output tubes, no add-on digital modules to cure the notorious "trem tick". I've beat them both like a rented mule at times and they've performed superbly. My other eleven Fender amps are all vintage pieces, mostly from the '60s. Never a problem with them, ever. My latest acquistion is a '67 silverface drip-edge Deluxe Reverb. It's more gutsy and ballsy than my re-issue, even with its stock OEM Oxford 12K5 speaker.

If it were a buy it now price then it might be okay, but it still has a week to go with two people bidding, and fifty five bucks to ship so I am sure it will go over a grand for something that I can't play or hear before hand. Additionally there are paypal fees.
I know it may be silly, but I am not into the whole bidding thing. I prefer to deal local. Thanks for finding it though!

Pay Pal fees are charged to the seller -- not the buyer. And prior to the bids that have been offered, the amp had a BIN price of $999.

You don't want to know.

And even if you do, I don't feel like getting banned from the forum......again.

This speaks volumes in and of itself..lol
Its amazing how complex an issue this can become. there are so many opinions, and some very good arguments on either side of the debate. Life was so much simpler as a bassist..lol
