Hello everyone, I am contemplating the purchase of a 66 SR with a 15 inch speaker. Does anyone have any experience with this configuration? The seller has the original baffle(minus the speakers) so I suppose I could change it back. I'm just curious if Fender used 15's in the SR, and what style of music this combo would be suited for. I'm a blues rock fan, and play primarily strats. Thanks

Unless the stock Super Reverb OT has been changed, don't expect a lot of volume from this amp. The factory SR tranny wants to see a 2-ohm load -- in the 1 x 15 configuration it's likely pushing its power into 8-ohms......

A two-hundred percent mismatch!

Arjay, thanks for your reply. I will have to ask about the output transformer, but lower volume might actually work better for me. Would this configuration harm the amp in any way? My understanding is that running higher ohm loads is okay, but I am far from being an expert.

Rltoma, If you are a Blues-Rock fanatic, I can't imagine a more perfect match made in Heaven than the 4 x 10-inch alnico loaded Super Reverb. Dang thing OOZES Blues. Believe me. With the GZ34 rectifier and 6L6GC combination, the amp sags just perfect. And still has bass up the wazoo.

Wonder if that owner still has those 10-inchers lying around...

I certainly wouldn't operate a vintage amp in such a manner.

That's what I am thinking as well, but this amp is going for a grand so I figure I can change it back since he has the original baffle. Unfortunately he does not have the speakers well actually he does have them, but he put them in his bassman. My concern is if the amp has been damaged by the 15 since it is a mismatch.

Well, if it still makes music, you are prolly ok. I wouldn't push the thing with the OPT seeing the wrong load. BTW, I loaded my SR with Weber 10A125--- very nice indeed. Maybe you can get him to knockoff some of the $$$, considering the wrong speaker.

I am trading him flight instruction towards his private certificate for it which is a great deal for me since I am short on cash.. I think I will change it back if this works out.

Are you a CFI?

You can frequently find matched quartets of period-correct Jensen C10Q's or CTS alnico's (both, the specified speakers for a '66 SR) on Ebay. The last set I saw (vintage CTS) were priced at $325, well worth it IMO.

HTH

If you play blues, then go with the CTS Alnicos...fantastic speakers! The webers are pretty good if you want to go with something new, and as Arjay suggests the original stype jensens are great too...but my 72 has the CTS and sounds...well...SUPER!

Enjoy the new amp, but do get some tens loaded into it!

I'd say I play more blues rock than straight up blues, but I,m sure your right about speaker choices. I,m still negotiating the deal so who know what will happen...

The Jensen Concert Series EM1500 currently installed in the amp is a fine speaker in its own right -- worthy of installing in an extension cab or (if you have one) a Pro Amp or a Vibroverb.

I have a MIJ 62 Strat with an alder body, but I don't have a guitar amp at this point so this will be my one and only amp for awhile (sure...that's what they all say..lol) I like the idea of getting a separate cab for the Jensen as this will provide more opportunities in the future. Let me say I really appreciate the wealth of knowledge possessed by you guys, and its great to be able to come here to ask questions. I truly value, and respect everyone's opinions. Any information shared is very much welcomed. Thank you.
