BluesT...Tone wise, not close...electronics wise, the JTM 45 was based on the Tweed Bassman, just using British components and valves (tubes to us on this side of the pond), so I would think they are somewhat similiar but not that close. IMO.

The closest contemporary Fender relative to a JTM45 is the CS Bassbreaker tweed combo, which was based on the 5F6-A re-issue.

I believe the JTM45 used Celestion Greenbacks while the Bassbreaker is fitted with a pair of V30's.

Completely different amps like Gibson and 7ender guitars

I remember the "Bluesbreaker" combo (JTM 45, model 1962) I played had Fane alnico speakers. I think Marshall put a lot of different speakers into his units back in the old days.

Anyhow, the BB with GEC/MOV KT-66, Fane speakers, and these surplus mil spec Hygrade trannies made the most aggressive, power harmonic tone. With a ton of sustain. Like it was always on the edge of total destruction. The way old Vox AC30 were like.

Though I believe that particular amp that EC used on "Beano" album with Mayall, lasted through the Greeny and Mick Taylor era. Then disappeared into some pawn shop. As far as I remember.

They show up periodically.

A pity that they were discontinued after so short a production run -- likely to make way within the line for Fender's CS low-power 5E8 tweed Twin (at about twice the price of the Bassbreaker).

I have been kicking around the Idea of making my SR a bit lighter and cutting the volume back. Cutting back to just 2 10" speakers would probably cut the volume back some, provided I used the right speakers. I was thinking along the lines of the 10" green backs which are raited at 95db or the weber DT. I'm not sure 2 weber dt's would handle the watts though. Arjay I know you don,t aprove of such but I would keep everything to put it back original. Arjay what is the db raiting on the stock cts speakers ? I was offered $700. for the SR last weekend but I just couldn't let it go. Then again I might just leave it as is.With these two and an ABY switch  Image

I have a friend in Canada who's wrestling with an identical dilemma, BT.

Some basic facts -- your Super Reverb wants to see 2Ω at the speaker jack for optimum performce (ie: the full 40-watt kick). You can safely go as high as a 100% mismatch with these older amps; thus, a 4Ω load (a pair of 8's, wired in parallel) shouldn't present any problem. The amp's output will be reduced to roughly 28 watts, which is still plenty.

The CTS alnico speakers have a SPL of approximately 98dB (1w/1m) so they're not exactly the most efficient driver available. However, what they lack in efficiency they more than make up for in the tone department.

A custom 2 x 10 cab for this amp and recycling a pair of the existing speakers would be a great way to procure some portability and still retain most of the vintage vibe that a Super Reverb is legendary for.

Something to think about anyway......

HTH

Arjay, I like that Idea. I can use 2 of the original speakers. Would it have to be a open back cab.Hmm.?? Like you said that is something to think about.

If you want the amp to sound like a traditional combo, yes -- the open-back infinite-baffle enclosure is best. Sonically, you'll end up with something very close to a Vibrolux Reverb.
