What's the lowdown on these guys? There's one on craigslist for $350, and the guy says it's the cleanest amp in the world. I'm sure that claim is not factual, but how clean are these things. I currently have a Deville 212, and I'm looking for something a little cleaner, and smaller. I was really thinking about a deluxe reverb, but they are quite a bit more than this vibro champ, How do these amps stack up against each other. Thanks

edit: Forgot to mention that It would mostly be used for recording.

You are talking two different beasts. HR Deville 212 is a 50 watt+ push-pull 2 X 12inch combo. A SF Champ is a 6 watt single-ended 8-inch amp. Think of a 18-watt Marshall head unit versus a 100 watt Lead. You get the idea....

+1

A Champ is your basic porch weasel......a whole lotta fun in a really manageable package.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was kind of unclear, but I was talking about how the Vibro Champ stacks up against the deluxe reverb. My main goal is clean sound, but still with tube tone. That's why I've been looking at the deluxe reverb, b/c I've read that that's it MO.

Main question is:
Is the Vibro Champ a good choice for clean tones for recording?

thanks again.

IMHO, a VC is not the best choice for "clean" tone. Single-ended amps have an early onset of OD. Albeit, slower and Bluesier than push-pulls. If you want really clean, you should look for a push-pull 6L6GC driven amp. And not a 6V6GT driven amp (like the DRRI). It's the nature of the power tubes. Speaker changes can help delay the breakup, but the ultimate tone is going to be different between the two types of tubes.

Maybe a good used Bandmaster Reverb?

Yep the Champ won't have e ton of clean headroom, but they're really sweet sounding amps. I love my 74.

They get real mean and ballsy-sounding when you wire one up to a larger speaker or a separate cab. My '68 Bronco really roars through a 2 x 15 Showman enclosure.

My new Gibby with the P-90's really makes my 74 Champ sing. Hard to believe the P-90's are single coil.

Great fender clean for recording at low volumes; probably not the amp of choice for gigging unless you've got a great PA and great monitors. Great 6V6 Fender if you don't have one, and you'll be amazed what the real Fender sound sounds like.

Much smaller amp, you'll get dirty at lower volume than the Deville. And that's when it sounds good :)

for that, simple green and a scrub brush for the tolex.

Clean as in the sound of a Fender tube clean amp - sounds great. very different from your deville.
