Hello all, maybe someone here can help me with a technical question. i recently got my hands on a great working '74 twin reverb (silver face) that has been around the block but still working and sounding great. just a couple of weeks ago however, i noticed when i use the reverb there is a rattle coming from the tank. i'm not sure whats causing this, but i've narrowed it down to the tank, but i'd like to get some input before i dive into it. the rattle comes from harder picking attack. any suggestions of what it might be?

Is there a piece of thick cardboard affixed to the bottom of the tank and is the tank correctly mounted in a vinyl bag?

the tank seems to be in the vinyl bag, and i'm assuming thats factory condition. it kind of makes the sound an amp makes when you set it down rough and the springs move, but a softer sound.

Carefully open the tank and inspect it for any loose or disconnected springs. There should be two pairs within it -- it's possible that one pair's set of springs have become disconnected from one another.

Do the spring sets seem to have sufficient tension to prevent them from hitting each other or the inner walls of the tank?

the springs are suspended but they do seem a little loose. they aren't touching each other right now but i'm not sure how much they move when being played through

i took a look around, unplugged and re-plugged the input cable from the tank and its still rattling. I'm not sure whats causing the problem. perhaps i should try playing while the tank is open so i can see whats happening?

To isolate your tank as the problem, you might try substituting a known good reverb tank into the amp and see if the problem persists.

It's really a dumb question? But how loud are you playing. If the amp is not on a level surface the vibrations could make the amp rattle against the floor and you could get a reverb rattle. So make sure it's on a level surface.

i'm playing at about speaking volume. the master is set around 2 and the channel a little above 2. and the amp is on a hardwood floor.

Is the floor level? I have hardwood floors too.I have to move the amp around so it does not wobble. If that does not do the trick it's more then likely a loose spring in the reverb tank. You can get a replacement reverb tank real cheap something for like under $50 or try to tighten it.buy wedging a piece of wood into it.
