Gentlemen
Any thoughts and or advice on a Variac,specifically what amp rating,and is a 2 prong cord and outlet a deal breaker or can they easily and inexpensively swapped for the 3 prong type.Thanks for any and all thoughts on these.Craig

I bought my Variacs awhile back (20 years), when getting into this tech business. At that time you could get good deals on used military or University Lab surplus items. I have USAF, Navy, and even Submarine Service (Groton, CT) stamped Variacs.

I'd get a good 10 -15 amp rated one (read: made in US of A). Superior Electric (Powerstat), Staco, or General Radio are good starts. Check Ebay and CL.

With used ones check for wear... esp on the shaft. The pole should not have much sideways play. You prolly only need one for 0-140 VAC use. Many have wiring optional. Use the three-prong ones. With three-prong outlet.
