Pre-65 Oxfords always sound better than the later editions, likely due to increasingly lax manufacturing tolerances cause by the higher production quotas that the CBS machine demanded once they assumed control over Fender. I've heard old 12M7's in a blonde Bandmaster that sounded as sweet as maple syrup while newer 12K5's seemed to just strangle the sonic potential out of a blackface Deluxe Reverb.

I'm not surprised, I've noted in the mid 60's Blackface amps, that the Oxfords didn't sound as good as any of the '64 and earlier speakers And I'd bet you're right, the CBS fast push out the door attitude really started to show right out the gate. Sending you a PM about this particular amp ;)

+1

It's also why Utah was brought on board as a speaker supplier to help pick up the slack -- even more important subsequent to 1967, when FMI/CBS threw Jensen under the bus over a pricing dispute.

Now that's a sad story, I love vintage Jensens, CBS really screwed the pooch on that deal.......

Ironically, though Jensen was removed from Fender's roster of speaker suppliers, Jensen Vibranto series speakers were offered as a no-charge upgrade to customers who submitted a warranty claim for a blown speaker in a new amp. These Vibranto's were a regular production driver with a standard Jensen label and performance specs similar to a C10N, C12N, or C15N. The speakers were to be ordered direct from Jensen by authorized Fender dealers, with the invoice cost then repaid to them by FMI.

Arjay, you've seen these images (and a personal thanks for your offline help), but for everyone else, I was able to finally get the original matching 1 X12 ported 'tone ring' cab!! I hounded and hounded the poor guy until he gave up......here she is loaded with a '61 Jensen P12N, one of my favourite speakers (note the unusual green swoosh colored flat Fender logo):

As smooth a blonde if there ever was such a thing.

She looks great, Steve!

Be sure to let me know when those leg stops arrive.

Well the clerk at the post office did say 5 to 6 days transit time from the US to Australia so hopefully you'll have them installed on your cabinet within a week or so.

Hopefully......

BTW, have you sourced a set of covers for the amp?

I'd take a look at Tuki or D2F. Standard covers from Fender will not fit your particular requirements since the 1 x 12 tone-ring cab is slightly smaller than the current Super Sonic or Tone Master 2 x 12 enclosure and your Bandmaster head is slightly wider than a newer blackface or silverface model.

Thanks for the tips Arjay, I was wondering how difficult it would be to find one that fitted the tone ring cab...

There's also this outfit......

However, I've never received a response to any of the queries I sent them.
