I have a 1955 Bassman and am trying to return it to its original state,
including NOS caps. But my question here is the cord below an actual
1956 Bassman cord and if so, would it be authentic for my 1955?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1956-Fender-Tweed-Bassman-Deluxe-PEC-Power-Cord-2-Prong-/230667806428?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35b4df66dc

Or go to ebay and search on Item number: 230667806428

Thanks for your help!

Kurt

It looks authentic. But that isn't to say it actually is authentic.

I really don't think NOS caps will do anything. These things do not improve with age or if they sit for 50+ years. The electrolytic crystallizes from non use.

Is there a specific reason why you want to restore it to that state? Unlike restoring cars where NOS parts are coveted, no one wants NOS capacitors - unless you are never going to use the amp again. For cars, it's called a Trailer Queen, as it's taken to and from shows in a trailer and usually never gets driven - it's pushed into position.

NOS Tubes - yes. NOS caps - bad idea. Think of them as a 1950's battery to put in your '57 Chevy to be "authentic."

Another option is gutting an original-but-tired Mallory filter cap and re-using the exterior hull to sleeve over a modern Sprague Atom or F&T. Thus, the visual "vibe" of the chassis is preserved while assuring safe-and-reliable performance. Not so many blackface fans do this but the procedure is near-mandatory for the die-hard tweed and brownface addicts.

I was going to slowly re-form the old caps.

Good luck with that!

Got an EPA-approved haz-mat suit?

I'd wear during the attempt if I were you.

Kurt, you can try re-forming, but the issue with old electrolytic caps is not just reforming, but they tend to lose their electrolytic fluid after awhile (or "dried-out"). You can tell just by feeling the wieght of the original cap versus a new old (with same ratings). The old ones often are noticeably lighter weight.

What this means is the total mfd of the dried-out cap is less than when it had all its fluid. Its filtering and reserve capacity is much less, at that point.

Good luck with your amp!

+1

In extreme examples the electrolyte leaches from the heated caps, pools in the cap can, then dribbles down into the amp's cab. Well-worn vintage Super Reverbs are notorious for having electrolyte stains on the frames of their uppermost pair of speakers.

I've seen Gerald Weber talk about this, even though I like to open an amp and see vintage original caps, the thought of a new cap in disguise is just that....anyway,how often am I going to peek under the "doghouse"? :D
