I just picked up my uncle's old amp from his basement. It is a BF Super Reverb, that he thinks he purchased in 1965 and it has not seen the light of day since the mid 70s. Other than it being dirty and moldy on the outside, it fired up and sounds great.

Here's where I need some help. I plan to start using the amp, so I am wondering should I do anything to the amp? Convert it to three-prong? If I have it checked out by a tech should I ask him to do or look for anything special?

The tube chart states #4 AB763, the chassis is stamped A10172 and the speaker code is 903565 (Blue Fender Label Speakers). I cannot find the speaker code for these anywhere.

Any help or advice would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks!

The data here will be of some help......

http://www.superiormusic.com/page195.htm

I strongly urge that you do NOT plug this amp in and play it until you've had it fully bench-checked and serviced by a competent amp technician. Since it's been sitting idle for close to forty years I'll bet money that the filter caps are oozing electrolyte and are in need of replacement. Likewise there are some mandatory safety mods which should be performed to prevent injury or death (these mods are non-invasive and will not impair the amp's performance in any way).

Good luck with the amp, it sounds like a great score.

+1 to Arjay's post....find the best tech in your area,if you know who it is already, fine, but if you don't,ask around for awhile, not everybody who claims to be an amp tech really is.
If that amp can be cleaned up and serviced without being butchered by a hack, you will have something to enjoy for many, many years to come.
Good luck!

Can't agree much more with these posts. This is a GREAT amp. A little preventative maintenance will give you years of good service & high market value. The 'lytic caps should automatically be replaced, if they are 15 years old or the amp has been unused for more than 7 years. And after replacing them, I like to ramped the power with a Variac. You can check the voltages at key points and see if you have any shorts of other issues, BEFORE full power is applied & a $$$$ part goes up in smoke.

Anyhow, good luck with the BFSR. I LOVE my SFSR find. This puppy is going to stay in the family until death (and prolly longer).

To the amp's peril, Stratele.

For the ignorance of others I am blameless.

All this talk about Super Reverbs made me realize I couldn't remember what mine sounded like so I went and plugged it in...

Oh yeah! That's why I bought it!
