Just bought a '60's bandmaster cab off CL for cheap and will be revising it; came with 2 Rola Celestion G12-80's, but have 2 Warehouse Speakers on order to replace.

Piggyback inserts are there; tolex needs a good scrubbing, and at some point, some guy painted the grill cloth black...

Back panel held in with drywall screws.

About to order the real deal screws and cup washers (Angela? Mojo? Someone else?) but wanted to know how many is the right number - 12? 24?

any pics will help. I'll take some pictures today as I open the back to check the cabinet date stamp and the Rola Celestion date codes...

thanks!

Is it the original Bandmaster cab (with tilt-back legs) or the later "big box" vertical enclosure?

The small cab uses 28 screws -- oval-head philips, #9 x 1½", nickel-plated.

The larger box requires 36 screws -- same specifications.

Cup washers were used perodically up through the late '68 model year, then were switched to beauty washers thereafter (both types also nickel-plated)

Original Bandmaster 30 x 20 x 11 with the tilt back legs.

I'll order the screws and cup washers - thanks!

About to put the piggy back clip bars on the amp head. Any tips?

Oh, and the Rola Celestions date code of HL18 means they were built November 18th, 1975. Nice sounding speakers for someone who wants them...

and because you guys will know...

The old insulation is ratty, ratty ratty.

I know I should replace, but should I replace with insulation like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/160640794005#ht_2142wt_1398

Or something more like this?

Like the fact this one is less itchy...

thanks!

If you're using the cab strictly with guitar you may find you don't need the damping sheets at all. Try it both ways and go with whichever configuration sounds best.

Thanks Arjay. I have the Warehouse speakers coming next week so I'll have time to clean out the old insulation and see what the cab is like without it first.

The cab + showman head may also get used for bass, so I'm leaning towards putting new 1 1/2" insulation back in, or that polyester batting from the link I posted.

Piggybar clips went on fine and the T-nuts are firmly seated in the head; my main guitar shop ordered the 16" tilt back legs, so they should be here in a week.

Damping sheets were used "back in the day" because purpose-designed bass speakers had yet to be developed. The standard Bassman speaker of the era was Jensen's C12N or Oxford's 12T8 -- both, the same speaker as used in the Twin Reverb (hardly a bass driver). The damping sheets were intended to limit cone excursion and provide a modicum of survival opportunity (at least for the one-year term of Fender's warranty back then) during extreme high-volume/low-frequency "events". Today's contemporary bass speakers generally do not need such assistance.

Retroverbial , are you sure it is number 9 ? IMO it is num 8. No number 9 in the marquet ?

I removed some original screws from my '67 Bandmaster enclosure, took them to the hardware store, and compared them with the store's available stock. They were closer to #9 than #8, primarily in the shank diameter. Either will probably work but the #9 fasteners were a better fit to the repro beauty washers I used.

Update:

Last night pulled out all the old yellow insulation; it was barely held on, but had glue all over the cabinet - I had thought they stapled it on? Oh well.

Spent this evening with a flathead screwdriver pulling out all of the staples to take off the mess of a grill cloth; will buy an electric stapler and stainless staples this weekend (any reco's, I'm open). Removed the Rola Celestion speakers and vacuumed out the cab, grill and speakers. Speakers will go on eBay tonight.

Warehouse 12's arrive Friday; Mojo hardware, wiring, arrives Saturday, but now I need new speaker screws and nuts as the old ones were bent (?!?!!!!) and want new ones. Seeing if Mojo can zip them out to me...

http://www.mojotone.com/amp-parts/Screw ... w-lock-nut

Still waiting on the tilt-back legs from my local dealer, so I won't install insulation or close up the back until then... felt good to get it cleaned up.

Pictures over the weekend.

If you wish, I'll send along a tutorial on installing grill cloth with a few how-to pics that should help ensure pro results.

Shoot me an e-mail.

while I'm waiting for my order from Mojo, a few pictures of the cab - maybe folks can figure out what it is. Measurements are 30x20x11, which is an older Bandmaster cab.

Inside of Cab - notice red "82" written. Same on back of cab back.

picture showing cabinet back. Insulation was nailed, not stapled with brads to the three cross braces.

Cabinet back and 2x12 baffle; baffle has holes for 8 screws.

Any thoughts?

Yes!

I am now positive beyond any doubt that your cab began life as a 1 x 12 tone-ring enclosure intended for use with either a Bandmaster or a Showman 12. Note the details visible in this photograph and compare them to yours......

Image

No Fender cab ever received that type of reinforcement for the rear panel save for the tone-ring enclosures.
