Inside the chassis, adjacent to the bottom of the power transformer and biasing circuit, you'll often find a inkstamped date which indicates the week and year that the wiring and testing was completed. Usually it will pre-date the date code stamped on the cabinet's tube chart -- sometimes by as much as a couple of weeks or even a month.

As an example, here's the chassis of my Princeton Reverb......

By the tube chart, the amp dates to November of 1965. The chassis stamp narrows that down a bit further to the 45th week of the year.

That occurs quite often with the CBS-era amps -- in fact, it's not unusual to see trannies sometimes as much as a year apart among certain types. This also happened frequently during model-year changeovers. It makes dating these vintage amps that much more of a challenge. My all-original '65 Princeton Reverb has a power tranny dated "5-40" while the output tranny is a year older at "4-38".

Leo Fender didn't want to throw anything out - waste not want not. Even some of the tube charts may have spec'd one circuit, but were actually the newer one. Transformers were ordered probably in minimum quantities from Schumacher et al.

Rule of thumb is regardless of how old some date codes are, your amp is only as old as the newest date code on a part of the amp. If your transformers all date to 1964 but the chassis stamp is 1966, then you have a 1966 amp.

+1!

Tube charts are notoriously inaccurate for circuit identification after 1967, once the CBS geniuses started tampering with the amps. Early silverfaces from '67 and the first six months of '68 were generally built to the previous blackface specs but beyond that date it was "Katie-bar-the-door" as the old AB763 circuits were "upgraded" to newer revisions.
