I have a 1971 Twin Reverb that I really love. Everybody knows the great clean sound these amps have. I also HAD a solid state Yamaha 2x12 amp for years that just died. I was using that Yamaha for all my higher gain music since the Fender has only clean and I have not found a good choice of stomp boxes to get the sound I want from the Fender,

Can anybody recommend some stomp boxes that I can use with the 1971 Twin Reverb that will give it some really nice gain/light distortion. I have tried my Tube Screamer Overdrive TS808 and it's not really giving me the sound I'd like more than just boosting the levels way higher than is useable for me so I have to have the output WAY down at like 1 or so. Then it just sounds kind of tinny and sort of compressed mids and just HORRIBLE. I also have a MXR Distortion III pedal that I could hook in the chain with the TS808 but i am having very unsatisfying results- sometimes it sounds okay with the level on one WAY up and the other WAY down - but both around the same level will overpower any situation with way too much volume.

I love classic rock, progressive rock, jazz-rock, and edgy blues guitar - Robin Trower and that sort of sound without too much distortion is really my goal. I had this sound down with the Yamaha but now that is dead and not coming back to life ever so I have to figure something else out with the Fender. Rather than just buy some stomp boxes and take them all back, I figured I would ask the forum to see what suggestions there might be for me.

Thanks!

You might give Line 6's Pod or Zoom's G1X amp simulator a try -- I've used the latter for over a decade now in front of various vintage Fender's (including a Twin Reverb) with good results. These devices do take time to properly tweak though.

I don't know if you have the original TS 808 or the reissued version... but I just got a TS-9, Keeley modded. And it works quite nice in front of "porch weasels" like VC's to BF Twin Reverb. May want to give one a test drive at your local gear shop.

Mine is the TS808 Re-issue. To tell you the truth, I have never liked this box. It has never sounded good to me on any amp yet I have kept it because so many people swear by it that I thought that I was just not doing something right or I just needed that perfect companion to this thing. Perhaps mine was defective from the start but I just get a really tinny and washed out sound from it. I just read about the Keeley mod of the TS-9 and I am very intrigued in that! Thanks for the suggestion.

How does that TS9 work for partial chords and double stops, etc. ? Or is it just for single note work ? I'm looking at warming up a BF Band Master or Bassman at a lower volume.(think small club or church) Art

My Keeley TS-9 has pretty wide range of adjustment in its OD. Double stops, unison bends, slides, other articulations can be made to sound with just a tad of OD to super fuzzed out. To completely clean (as the bypass is pretty true to the amp-only tone).

I am not familiar with the TS-808 mods that Keeley does, but pretty happy with the TS-9. I guess the best way to put it, is you can make a super clean Twin Reverb sound kinda like it's being driven by 6V6GT's. Without blowing your neighbors into the next area code.

I'd at least give it a try, if you can find a shop that carries it, as a demo.

Thanks ! I have little or no experience with pedals, so another question. Where would it go in the chain with a stand alone reverb unit ?

I'd try it before the Reverb Unit. Just for convenience sake. But, you can flip-flop the positions and see what sounds the best.

I take it the stand alone reverb is a spring tank jobby?

An add-on reverb device with a Twin Reverb?

Diabolical!

No, I meant a Weber unit, I built. For my Bandmaster and Bassman. Yeah, a little off topic. Art

Weber's 5H15 "ReVibe" always intrigued me -- the marriage of two great Fender effects, footswitchable in a single unit. I'm somewhat surprised that FMIC hasn't seen the potential for profit in offerring something like this......
