i have an opportunity to buy one of them. The twin is listed at $500, and the Concert at $600. I play blues and classic rock (zep, ac/dc, deep purple, hendrix). I can use an OD pedal either on the clean channel or on the gain channel to add more gain if the amp gain isnt enough.

Which of these have a better reputation among tube dudes? Tyanks.

I'd say it's a tossup as far as tone and reliability goes.

Which speaker configuration is the Concert model?

It's a 1982 4x10. What do you think? Save the $100 and get the Twin or is the Concert worth an extra $100?

The Concert is a newer amp with, presumably, less potential for the need to replace aging parts. As well, you may find more flexibility with its 50-watt output than with the "el monstro" Twin's 100-watts. They both weigh about the same so that really wouldn't be a consideration.

Thanks for the info Arjay. So, they sound pretty similar? Doesn't the Red Knob Twin have a switch to go from 100 to 25 watts? Wouldn't that give me the flexibility too, or not really?

I'm not sure about the RK Twin -- it might.

I do remember playing through a Concert Amp or two though, "back in the day". I thought they sounded pretty punchy. The 1 x 12 version seemed to be a waste of the amp's potential but the piggybacks and the 4 x 10 combo's seemed "just right" for the times.

Yes the RK Twin has a 1/4 power switch. I have played both and actually prefer the Concert (own a '84 2X10 Concert) and I thought the reverb was better...and I have never had a need for more firepower of the concert.

I also think the Concerts Clean channel has better crispness to it. The distortion channel can go from Fender Grit to just this side of heavy metal.

I bought my Concert (new in 84) and when the RK Twins came out later I actually A/B'd it to the Twin and decided to keep my Concert...I play blues and classic rock and it was usually able to cover most things w/o a distortion box in front. Also one last thing on this...If you run a short cable from the Effects loop pre-amp out to the Pre-amp in, the Concert brings on another preamp stage and this extra gain/distortion can be contolled by the preamp in/out adjustment on the back of the amp...kind of like having a third channel.

FWIW

+1

For some reason, all of those RK amps always sounded "muddy" to my ears.

+1 That was the word I was looking for...muddy...the Concert is much more crisp and are the last of the PTP hand wired amps Fender made...
