Anybody use the groove tube gold series tubes? I've been use NOS tubes when I could get them, but the reverb on my DRII went out so following some advice from fellow fenderites I replaced the AT7 driver and AX7 recovery tubes. The only tubes I could get at GC were the GT golds. I must say I was impressed the reverb sounds great. With old tubes becoming harder and harder to find, I'm always looking for an alternative, if all groove tubes are as good as these I wouldn't have a problem using them. Anybody have opinions, good or bad on groove tubes?
Thanks,
filerj

Thanks joncarr,
That's what I wanted to know, never used GT before but these work well. I know GT doesn't make their own tubes, most of them don't. I know there are only a couple of places that make tubes and companies just brand them as theirs. Are there any ones in particular that you like. About 20 years ago a local electronic shop went out of business and I stocked up on some sets for my amps, ( a Twin and a DRII ) but I just used up the last set in my twin. Old stock tubes are getting harder to find and prices are going up.
Thanks again,
filerj

I can't say about the newer GT glass but the older ones were apparently pretty good tubes. My first-year edition '93 DRRI still had its original complement of GT's when I bought it (used) in 2005. It didn't sound bad at all but it was biased cooler than I preferred. After a re-bias (and a full cap job) it sounded downright "meaty" but one of the 6V6's became microphonic shortly thereafter. I replaced them both with NOS gray-plate Motorola-marked GE's then swapped out all the pre-amp bottles as well as a matter of course. However, the original Groove Tube GZ34/5AR4 is still in the amp, still going strong. And it's nearly eighteen years old now! I should prolly notify the Guinness Books folks......
