The Oxford in the Vibrolux sounded like it might have a small problem and I was eventually going to pull it and put something else in,I did find a small tear in the cone.

A Tone Tubby Hemp Cone speaker, the guy I bought it from said he had only put about 10 hours on it and had it in a 5 watt amp project that he was working on,the speaker just didn't work that well for him in that little amp,he wanted some other things,so I got this for $200,I can't believe the tone it has,it's rated @ 50 watts the Vibrolux is about 35 watts....this speaker sounds fantastic!

Are you going to have that 12L6 re-coned, Reb?

I probably will Arjay, and I'd like to someday put it back in this Vibrolux, really the only major change so far has been the replaced output trannie...which leads to the only hang up I have about the new speaker in this amp...
I had read about these amps in The ToneQuest Report, they had three Brown Vibrolux's and they encountered a problem while trying out speakers, they said everyone they tried, the OT bumped against the speaker frame and wouldn't allow the chassis to be put far enough back in to use the straps and bolts, their solution was to take the front mounting small bolt out of the OT and swing it over to either side and then they could get the chassis back in.I had to do this also,so the front of the OT is kind of hanging down a bit and the rear bolt is holding it in....this bothers me some...even with the Oxford in the amp the OT was almost right against the speaker frame, closer than any other amp I have.
Have you encountered this RJ?

A couple of thoughts come to mind, Reb.

The inkstamp on that Oxford *seems* to indicate a 16Ω voice coil whereas it should measure 8Ω. The stock Vibrolux output tranny should be marked with FEIC part number 125A7A and it has a secondary impedance of 8Ω. I didn't know you had a replacement OT -- what brand is it and what are the specs, BTW?

I've seen clearance issues before with some stock Fender amps, usually those with a single fifteen. My '64 Pro and Vibroverb both require chassis removal prior to swapping any speakers. If possible, you might try rotating your speaker CW or CCW by one mounting hole and see if that buys you any additional tranny clearance.

RJ...yeah,before I bought the amp Gruhn's had sent it to their amp tech because it had a problem,he determined that the output transformer needed to be replaced,it was a 45217 code 606-140,in one of my books it states that trannie went into 5E11,5F11 & 6G11 model Vibrolux amps and the 6G11-A had the 125A7A OT.
The tube chart has this amp as a 6G11-A,so I guess it's one of those parts that was left over from the earlier models, who knows? you know how these old amps are,you never know what you will find,I put up a picture on a Facebook page of a Brownface amp group...there are some knowledgable guys there just like here....the guy who had the page was interested in the PT,which he determined was a Triad and he had thought Leo had quit using Triad around 1960...cool stuff,he said that some guys have said that it seems no two amps from this period are quite the same.
Like you I had wondered about the Oxford and the number, measuring the impedance I got a reading of 6.5 ohms, kind of another odd part..huh?
Thanks for the help Buddy.

Oh btw,the replacement OT is a Mojotone with a 4/8 ohm rating,I looked at the spec sheet and the tech used the right wire for an 8 ohm load if I looked at everything right....I've thought about getting a Mercury OT to put in,would the difference be worth it?
I just read on the Mercury site that they will take an old transformer and take it apart and rewind it...I might call them about that, they say it will be reconstructed back to the original configuration.

If you have the original tranny, it'd be worth the trouble to have it re-wound then re-installed in the amp, primarily in regards to resale value.

Mojotone's iron is made by Heyboer IIRC -- it's pretty good stuff. I doubt there'd be much, if any, sonic improvement with the MercMag tranny.
