Aside from a grounded 3-conductor power cord, a grounded 3-conductor AC convenience outlet, and a 3-way polarity switch, your Princeton Reverb is remarkably similar to the original AA1164 model.

I am having a blast with the amp.

The convenience outlet is a bit puzzling to me. I'd be afraid to plug anything into it. Is it safe to assume its not connected to the amp itself, but fed separately from the power cord?

My Princeton no-verb also has the convenience outlet.

So if I am reading the schematic correctly, the convenience outlet is in front of the amp AND there is the fuse to protect the amp from any power surges that could occur. Correct?

Vous êtes exact!

Any excess current draw downstream of the fuse should cause it to pop. Problems sometimes happen when incorrect fuse amperage is put into holder. Or shorts occur physically & electrically isolated (on secondary side of main power tranny). Far from the fuse (like the output power section). Then, hopefully strategically located resistors will usually pop, before $$$ power tubes and output trannies.

Oh yeah...one simple but important thing when you buy a vintage amp, look at the fuse and make sure it's the right one! Somebody could have put in a higher amp value that won't blow when it should....it's been known to happen.

+1!

I generally spend an hour on a "static" inspection of any amp I'm interested in before powering it up. I'll pull the chassis and visually inspect anything within reach of my eyes. A DVM always accompanies me on these "snoop-and-poop" missions to ascertain a speaker of the correct impedance or to check the continuity of anything that may seem wonky. And my Blackberry (yes, even this Luddite embraces some 21st century technology) is loaded with stats, data, and part numbers for virtually every vintage Fender amp. Only when I'm satisfied that all with a potential purchase is copasetic will I power it up for a sonic performance check.

Anyways, that's how I do it......YMMV, KDTTAH, yada yada yada.

That's the right way to go. With these older amps, you have no idea what "improvements" people may have made that could expose you to not only lethal voltages, but bad sound.

Speaking about pickups, I had to replace the muffler on my Nissan 4x4 Hardbody today. I was pretty miffed about having to spend $120 on a generic replacement because Nissan doesn't make that part anymore. I don't understand it......the sumbitch is only twenty-five years old.

I guess they really don't "build them like they used to".

...well the Deluxe Reverb has been serviced. Caps checked and tubes tested. Just one preamp tube replaced. The whole amp was cleaned, oh...new power cord was put on. My Tech stated that all is well and there are no major issues. Other than that I am excited to "fire" up those tubes. Wish me luck!

This just in - The 1980 Deluxe Reverb is all that and more. I have had just a bit of time to play it and I cannot tell you how much I enjoy the tone. I am one happy camper. With the Deluxe Reverb, Allen Sweet Spot, Fender Strat and Tele and G & L ASAT I am all set, now all I need to do is find a band..... 8)

The Beaubs house is filled with beautiful tones...I am in Fender heaven.

:D

Congrats, but you're just on your way towards the satisfying yet sometimes maddening Gear Acquisition Syndrome with that great Fender - soon you'll want different flavors, running multiple amps at the same time (hard to go back once you've done it), etc.

Enjoy!
