I'm using a 1975 pro reverb it's re-tube re-capped and biased and I still can't get a clean sound when I play above 5 on the volume. It breaks up and sounds bla. Is it time for new speakers and if so what should I use. I'm using a Strat, Tele, 335 and a Taylor playing mostly funk and classic rock. I need good clean sound at a somewhat high volume say above 6 and yes amp is mic'ed. We do a lot of outside gigs.

What speakers are currently in the amp?

Combo amps with their open-back infinite-baffle enclosures always fall on their face at outdoor venues unless (A) there is some sort of "backstop" behind the amp or (B) it's used with a sealed-back bass-reflex enclosure. It doesn't matter how much power is pushed or how efficient the speakers are -- the unassisted combo amp is always pissing away half of its available volume to the rear (simple physics).

Newell amps makes some nice cabinets; perhaps a 2x12 or 1x15 closed back cab with your speaker of choice is in order. For outdoor gigs, stack them and only connect the external speaker to your main speaker out, or have it connected to the External speaker, but it will a) get loud, and b) you'll never want to play just the Pro Reverb by itself again!

+1 but I'd first like to learn what speakers are in the amp. If they're OEM Oxfords or the even more worthless Utah's then the amp is not operating to its full potential. Hopefully the OP will provide that info.

Yep ! The other cab just needs to be 4 0hms. A substitute would be my choice ,at this point of the investigation. Art

Well 5 on the dial is usually the sweet spot where the amp starts to break up you probably most of the time don't get any louder volume just shade of distortion. I would go for some speakers with more wattage so you won't have some speaker distortion.

For a 75 pro reverb, there are plenty of speaker companies that would be a great upgrade to your stock speakers.

Weber
Kendrick (if you really want to spend)
Warehouse speakers - a friend of mine swears by them and recently redid his super reverb with 4 of their 10" American Vintage speakers. worth looking into.

I would like to replace the speakers in my 1975 Fender Pro Reverb I've had the amp totally gone through caps, tubes biased etc. and it sounds like crap above 5. I’m looking for a clean sound at a higher volume I play mostly funk some classic rock and blues I do a lot of outside venues. . I’m using a Strat and a 335. What would you recommend? The amp is 45 watts 4 ohms 2-12s Thanks

I don't think you understand that with whatever speakers you use, that amp is going to have some tube distortion the higher you go in volume, you're not going to find speakers that will increase the headroom all that much, you will find some that sound better...but it's going to breakup eventually....it's a tube amp and you're playing outside a lot...Arjay explained that in his first post.
Sell it and get a Twin Reverb.
