I have been thinking about replacing the stock speakers in my Concert II. The two Tens in it are not bad, just not the greatest. I just had it first cap job done since I bought it new all those years ago and of course a retube...I love those TAD 6L6's, they are fantastic!! It got me thinking the tone could get even better if I replaced the speakers.

I was thinking either some Webers, Mojo Tones, or even Celestian Greenbacks? I am looking for something close to the sound of the CTS 10 inch Alnicos like in a Super Reverb. It is a 60 watt amp and I am thinking I need at least 30 watters? They would need to be 8 Ohms as well. I would like some early breakup for this amp too.

Any suggestions?

The Celestion G10 Greenbacks are pretty much diametrically opposed to the tone and vibe of an alnico CTS -- more of a modern punchy bite than the warm compression of the blackface era. I think the G10's would sound pretty righteous and provide a nice counterpoint to your Super Reverb. That said, if you really prefer the alnico tone you might consider a pair of Weber 10A150's or even some hemp-cone Tone Tubby's (assuming your Concert Amp is exempt from any random "whiz-quiz" urinalysis testing).

Arjay, thanks, I never thought of having the Concert be a counterpoint to the Super Reverb. The Celestion G10 Greenbacks are the speakers I was looking at and since on the Concert I only really use the dirty channel they might be a really good fit.

I like the Weber 10A125P and they come in 30 Watters. I like a bright speaker and love the alnico tone.

I hadn't thought about Tone Tubby's and at this point in time no Whiz Quiz for the Concert! Although I had to take one as a condition of employment, not that it matters! I did some looking at Tone Tubby's and didn't see anything I liked based on thier discriptions.

Looks like I have at least narrowed it down to two speakers the G10's and the Weber Alnico 10A125P.

Thanks for the help...anyone else have an opinion on the two speakers I have narrowed it down too?

I'd also go to Warehouse speakers and look at their American Vintage series - some very good stuff.

Nedorama, thanks for the suggestion, they do look like fine speakers, but I think I am going to go with the Celestion G10s.

I put two Weber 10A150T speakers into a diy cab running a Bandmaster Reverb amp. And not only did the thing have vintage tone, but it was LOUD. I think I was running the amp a little under 40 watts. Very nice, clean tone. But, the breakup wasn't until "6" = very loud. Even in a band setting, the dummer and bass player kept telling me to turn it down. :D

BMW hope you told them Turn Down? NEVER! I like a little early break up and sounds like those might hold out till later. I will do some more research and see if I can't find some sound clips and narrow it between the Webers and Celestions. The search for tone continues!
