High Power Tweed Twin from 1960,

Hello Fender,
I am a player/collector and I have some cool amps.

One I want to find out more about is my 80 Watt Tweed Twin
from 1960. The Production is 22 and the build date
is ( JD ) or April of 1960. The s/n is A00780 and I believe may be the last Tweed Twin made. Greg Gagliano only has his serials for the Twins up to A00725.

Have you ever seen a Tweed Twin with a serial number higher than the A00780?

My Twin in this photo has all new Sprague Filter and Bias Caps under the Original Brown Astron Covers. I have all vintage glass in the amp, Mullard GZ34, Tung5881, Mullard 7025 V3, RCA 5751 in both V1 & V2.

This is a good amp with untouched solder joints on the signal caps. It has the 56k in the tone stack as well as the two .02/400v caps.
The 6.8k PI connected to the 4.7k on the Presence Pot.

WOW that is one clean Tweed Twin...but where is the Tube Chart? Seems awful clean to be missing the tube chart? Either way, great looking amp. You said you have more amps...let's see em...we love pics here, especially if they are as clean as that one.

I didn't realize a GZ34 could handle that much power, but all my reference material says the GZ34 was that last rectifier tube the Twin had before it went to a Solid State Rectifier in the Brown Face models...according to John Morrish's book The Fender Amp anyway.

FWIW

I got an NOS pair of those brown Bakelite Tung-Sols, just waiting for the "right" amp to come along.

Mighty clean Twin......nicest one I've ever seen!

T2Stratman,the tube chart should be on the left side looking from the back,it doesn't show in the pic.
Very nice Twin!!!

Reb, I always thought they were on the right side of the cab looking in from the back to front. Both of the Tweed amps I had ('59 Harvard, and '54 Champ) it was on the right side. And my '64 Princeton and '68 Champ has it on the right side as does my '72 SFSR?

The few narrow panel tweed Twins I've seen had the tube chart on the LEFT side (looking from the back). Check link. See the chart "hiding" under the power cable?

BMW...After you said that, I checked all my amps again and ran through old pics and everyone of them was on the right side, just in case my memory was on the blink. I went to ebay and checked photos of other tweed amps and sure enough some were on the right side...so I check some of my books and some where left and some where right. I would have thought they would all be on the same side, but it may be due to the size of the cab or there just wasn't a standard? Either way, that is one clean tweed amp and probably is one of the last ones made.

The only consistency for tube chart location seems to be with the piggyback heads -- their charts are always located on the side opposite the power tranny, with the exception of some early examples where the applíque was stuck to the bottom in rather haphazard form.

I remember what happened now, when I took this photo I put the chassis from my 1960 Twin and put it inside the 1957 cabinet, I have more than one 80 Tweed Twins. I just noticed this because of the leather handle on the top of the cab. The 1960 Tweed Twin has the light brown dogbone handle on the cab. The 1957 is s/n less than 50 and GL on the tube chart and
has the leather handle from the factory.

The Celestion Gold ALNiCo speakers are the best I have ever
used in a Twin.

The tube charts are on the transformer side of most Fullerton factory made amps, the Santa Ana factory installed most of the tube charts on the V1 side of the cab. You can notice this around mid 1966 if you study the tube charts around this time. The new 1967 Silverface amps with the Santa Ana factory builds have the tube charts on the V1 or right side of the cab looking from the back of the amps.

" more than one 80 Tweed Twins. " I have one question how does the wife or better half think of this? I don't even have 80 amps, and she gets a tad bit anxious, at times. Let's just say roses, nice dinners, movies, jewelry is part of the cost of maintaining my collection.

You really like those Celestion Gold in that powerful amp? It's prolly jst me, but I've only left that speaker in my BF Princeton Reverb. My experience is those Celestion's just dont project like Classic 30's or Weber's. Just my opinion.

Enjoy!

+1

That would give me cause for concern as well -- especially if the amp were used professionally for live stage work on a regular basis.

I bet it does sound tasty though.

I have a 1954 Fender 5D6 4x10 Tweed and the tube chart is on the left side.
Hope this helps. Toppscore 8)
