I just aquired a Fender Bassman amp with a 2x12 cabinet. It is of the blonde variety and very old. Not sure what speakers are in it, but am positive they are not the originals.

I will be using this amplifier for playing bass, not guitar. Any suggestions for what type speakers I should put in this amplifier?

Can you post some pics of the existing speakers, especially some showing any ID numbers that may be stamped on the frame or magnet assembly?

It might be wiser to re-cone your existing speakers as dedicated bass drivers -- cheaper as well (probably). There was a vendor on Ebay selling NOS 75-watt Fender-Eminence bass speakers but I haven't seen any auctions listed lately. I bought a pair to convert a '74 Bandmaster enclosure for use with bass and they work pretty well (and even sounded better for regular guitar than the original Oxfords that came in the cab).

These should be perfect for your purpose......

They're larger in power-handling capability than the ones I bought but this is the same vendor I got mine from.

Best of luck, HTH

The gentleman has already indicated that the existing speakers are not the originals to the cabinet.

Yes, I should learn to read carefuly Retroverbial to give the best advise to help.

In this case I'd like to be sure this gentleman don't make mistake. He said he don't know what speakers he had but he is posivetively sure they are not original !
Did he know enough speaker to tell that ? Whe wait for a picture.

Indeed, some pics would be extremely helpful.

Originals for a blonde small-box Bassman enclosure would likely be either Oxford 12T6's or Jensen C12N's.

Congrats! A Blonde Bassman with matching 2x12 cabinet is a great find, and with some work, you'll have a great gigging amp.

I really like my Weber California Ceramic 12's with the metal dust caps, as seen in my signature. While I normally play guitar, I do record bass for demos and find that these very efficient speakers are great for bass as well.

Regardless of what you get, you'll want a more efficient speaker (higher wattage rating) to play clean bass. The other usual caveats apply - you'll want to change out the power cord to a grounded three-prong type, change out filter capacitors, etc.

Can't wait to see the pictures. If the tolex is a little grimy, I found that spraying straight Simple Green on it and then scrubbing it with a scrub brush will bring it back to almost new. Take the amp chassis out of the cab first to avoid getting it sprayed - plus we all want to see the inside of that amp!

D2F covers makes great padded covers that will keep your blonde tolex from getting all beat up at gigs - if they don't have it in stock, they'll custom make it for you based on your dimensions. I had a custom one made for my Bandmaster combo (the amp that never was...or was it?) and fits great.

+1 on the D2F "cab condoms". I bought one of theirs for my '64 Pro Amp and it fits like the proverbial glove......well worth the premium price.
