I saw an old Fender catalog for sale on Ebay that had this guide that helped match guitars to amps that would work "best" for that guitar. Fender sure didn't seem to think much of those Princeton Reverbs back in the day.

Is the whole catalog on line somewhere. It's the "Collected works of Fender" from 1976?

Ha! According to that chart the Strat doesn't work well with all the amps they made then.

Yet more pabalum from the marketing gurus at FMI/CBS.

(the same rocket surgeons who tried to push the Zodiac amps on us)

It's like this, see......?

(actual phone conversation from way back when)

"Hello, marketing? This is sales."

"Whaddya want, ya putz?"

"Lookie here -- these monstrous Quad Reverbs and Super Six Reverbs just ain't sellin', pal."

"So?"

"We need you to print up a new brochure that says Strats and Teles only sound good through these two amps."

"Say what?"

"C'mon, help us out......we've got these boat anchors stacked to the goddam rafters!"

"Okay, okay. But you're gonna owe us, pal."

"No sweat -- next quarterly management meeting, I'll bring you some donuts."

And so was written the history of the CBS corporate mentality.

An even bigger joke is the price some folks want for the catalog.

http://www.rareguitarparts.com/store/mcart.php?ID=704

Although it was a rather nice catalog.

And then there's that half page format so you can see if the amp and guitar will look good together. I mean, how would a starcaster look next to a champ?

 Now I find that surprising that Princeton Reverbs and Deluxe doesn't work with our Fenders. Well I guess that's their loss.

They came up with this chart in 1976? And what evil thing did they put into a Telecaster Custom that doesn't make it compatible with a DR? Yet, the plain old Tele is?

Inquiring minds want to know!

It's what happens when a guitar company hires ad-copy writers whose only experience with music comes from loading an 8-track tape into the under-dash Learjet player in their AMC Gremlin.
