What is the ultimate speaker for a '64 Princeton?

Answer? A Reconed CTS Alnico 10 :!: Retoverbial and I were talking on the forum one day and I said I was looking for a replacement speaker for my Princeton and he suggested a CTS Alnico 10 might fit the bill for what I was looking for sound wise (as close to original sound as possible). He had three CTS Alnico's that he got out of a Fender PA and had them reconed, set up to 8 Ohms, so I PM'd him and bought it...long story short, I put it in my Princeton today and HOLY CRAP, it sure woke up the amp...Lots of snap, tight lows, and tone to die for. Even had the old Fender label on it so it still looks stock 8)

I have had three speakers in the amp trying to make it sound better, It had the original Oxford in it, it was ok, but nothing to write home about. Next I tried a Celestion, and again sounded good but was not what I was looking for, I even tried a new Jensen P10R that a friend loaned me and nope those new ones are not the same as the old Chicago made ones...needless to say that CTS hit the nail on the head...it's like a new amp. I had NOS tubes in it, but the speaker just made that thing talk. I look forward to breaking that speaker in. Will posts some pics of it once I get some time not playing the amp!

Thanks Arjay!

Nothing too good for a retired senior NCO, sarge.

Hand salute!

I love it when a plan comes together.... :D
A speaker change is easy, finding the right one is not always easy...but when you finally do it just opens up the tone of the amp.
Congrats on finding the right one....Arjay knows his amps and speakers!

It was actually Leo who determined what speakers made his amps sound their best.

I merely provide a convenient reminder of that fact from time to time.

Leo was a prophet of tone wasn't he?...a man who did so much for music that it would be impossible to imagine what the last 60+ years would be like without his guitars and amps.

He and Les Paul each rate a commemorative postage stamp IMO.

I don't think its a stretch to say both of them were geniuses. Literally - not figuratively.

Screw the stamp..... national holiday.

Leo Probably single handedly caused 80-90% of the improvements to guitar speakers with his Amps...and as promised a picture of the new/old speaker in it's new home...

Vintage speakers, like vintage wines, tend to improve with age.
