I've tried different preamp tubes in my SR... I've found that the right tube in V4 makes a huge difference for me to get the tone I like out of this amp. This right tube happens to be an old RCA 12AX7, and it only completes the amp in V4, doesn't sound as good in V2 IMO.

What is it about V4 that affects the tone so much on the SR? I've tried whatever 12AX7 I have in V4 and only the RCA works for me. I'm using the Mullard RI in V2, that's the only tube that comes close to the RCA in V4, but still lacks a bit of that magic. But it sounds great in V2.

The RCA is the only NOS preamp tube I have... so what would be a similar tube, new or old? Anyone else experience the same thing with V4? It's kinda hard to explain the result, but overall the tone is so sweet! Amazing highs with plenty of harmonics and the low end is mean sounding yet still tight. I'm guessing the 2nd gain stage has something to do with it. :?

If you mean Super Reverb, Tube #4 is the reverb recovery tube if you use reverb it is a very important tube.It kinda add to the tone of the vibrato channel

Sorry, this is a '73 Super Reverb. I know what V4 does, but in my amp it seems to have a big effect on the tone, just as important as V2 if not more, it kicks the amp into overdrive in a way. But this only seem to happen with the RCA in there. I'm assuming it's the second gain stage. I get similar results in my DRRI, but it's more pronounced in the SR.

Just wanted to see if anyone can explain what the RCA is doing in there that the other tubes can't do, and what other preamp tubes out there that can do the same...
