I've come seeking advice and experience yet again. Cruising through one of the local C/L's I've spotted a couple of intriguing items in my never ending speaker quest. The first is a 4ohm 15" square magnet CTS speaker from a '70's Kustom 2x15 guitar cab, that's supposed to be rated at 100 watts. The guy claims he is a Kustom tuck'n roll collector who likes to upgrade the cabs with JBL's and E/V SRO's. He wants $30 for the 15" CTS. The second item is an early '80's Peavey 212 SX cab with Black Widows, wired for a 4 ohm load-from what I've read these speakers can handle a lot of power, upwards of 200W. That guy wants $150 for the cab. Now I know taste and tone are subjective, but DC is a hundred mile round trip from here and I'd like to know if anyone out there has had any experience with either of these items and can tell me what to look for/expect in terms of sound, durability and overall quality of either or both of these. As always, I'm looking for something that will match well with my '68 DSR. Thanks for any help!

The square-magnet alnico CTS 15's were used in Kustom (and Fender) bass amps. Thus, it's not a full-range driver and not likely to favor guitar tones from your Showman.

I don't personally like Peavey's Scorpions or Black Widows but that's a purely subjective opinion.

I have no love for cabs so heavy that they could, in a pinch, double as an anchor for the Exxon Valdiz.

hey a 2X12 is a great cabinet to have on hand.
if the cab is in good shape and he can get it for $100, he done something.
he can switch the speakers to whatever he likes from there or leave the stock speakers in.
yeah they are a bit heavy, but built like a dang tank. much like the 80's era peavey amps, they are work horses and just cant be destroyed. quality stuff.

Thanks Arjay and Way Cool. I may have to quiz the guy with 15" CTS a little harder before committing to a trip. Reviews I've read for the Peavey proprietary label speaks are all over the board-some love'em, some hate'em. The one consensus seems to be be that they're well nigh indestructible, and that the '70's and '80's Peavey products are massively over-built. I remember those times when Peavey was considered a cheaper, poor man's Fender- then it became apparent that every other pro-slick C&W band had a stage full of Peavey amps. The snickering stopped and prices started to rise accordingly. Thanks for all your insights, O...

good luck to you. your right, some love them and some hate them. nothing wrong with being over built. go look at todays poor quality under built crap and you will be greatful for the sturdy heavy duty peavey. back then peavey was built to last and withstand the abuse that the road would give them. you could always get the cab and give the speakers a try
for your tastes. if ya dont like them, buy new speakers and put them in. easy as that.
do you have any pics of the 2X12?
