Hi,
Which deoxit (there are many) is recommended for cleaning tube pins and tube sockets?

I see differing opinions on the net. Some say Gold g5 some say d5, some say don't use any deoxit product.

Thanks.

I've used Caig Dexoit D5 for years. The newer Deoxit Gold GN5 has solvent that can withstand higher temps, than the original. The key USE THE LEAST AMOUNT NEEDED and clean up any excess spray with a clean (I try to use lintless) cloth and Isopropanol.

Too much leftover can lead to a goopy mess later. One can should last you years. Even if you are working on amps all the time.

Radio shack sells it in a 2 pack for about $15,they are very small cans, but if you are doing an amp or two it should be fine

There is a gold g5. Is that the one? Is the d5 enough or is the gold one better.

For preamp sockets and tube pins is spraying the pins and inserting and removing the tubes enough to clean the socket and pins. Is there a need to dry out the sockets after the deoxit is applied.

I have both. I'd prolly get Caig Gold GN5, from now on---only because it has a much higher temp tolerance, before breaking down and gunking up the works.

The active ingredients evaporate relatively quickly -- in two or three minutes you can safely re-install the tubes.

I see that there is a deoxit gold liquid version. Rather then getting the spray version, would using the liquid version and "painting" it on the tube pins lightly an then inserting the tubes in the sockets be a good way to clean the sockets and pins. It's cheaper to get the liquid (non-spray) version.

The liquid will prolly work just as well but require a few extra minutes to fully evaporate. Allow for more time to dry and you should be good to go.

The Deoxit Gold DN5 is not designed strictly for gold pin tubes. It was designed for higher temps, and not decomposed like the earlier version of Cramolin which had a tendency to gunk up due to chemical reaction under heat.

Deoxit D5 = 5% solution and 95% solvent.

The paint on, small bottle stuff is 100% solution. So use very little of the solution to paint onto any surface. And wipe off excess.

Leave a thin coat of the Dexoit on the electrical suraces which are going to contact. The tube pins & socket slot, for instance. Or a light coat on the, fuse holder and fuse, input jack and speaker connection. This will keep the surfaces from oxidizing. Wipe all excess Deoxit from the chassis, plastic parts, wires, etc---which have nothing to do with metal to metal electrical contact.

I usually do this once when re-doing amps (sockets, pins, input jacks, speaker jacks, swtiches). And that is usually good for a long time. Even if the amp is used primarily outdoors. A very light coat is all you need.

If you are swapping tubes to test for tone qualities. Leave just a thin layer on the pins of the tubes. This will really help with rolling tubes and not bending pins.

Good luck! It's good stuff. BUT more is not better. LESS is best.

Looking at the deoxit site they have standard sprays and they have the new non-drip quick dry spray. Would it be better to use the standard one for tubes and tube sockets if i am applying the spray to the tube pins and then inserting them into the sockets to apply the cleaner so that it doesn't evaporate immediately? Or just getting the pen or liquid type and applying a small amount be even better then the spray?

I'd just get the spray. As you may need it for other applications. Such as pot cleaning, even connnections around the house. It comes with a long nozzle, helps with car connections, too.

Just my opinion.

+1

The multi-use applications for the spray-on type makes the liquid version a non-starter, at least for me.

I too have used this with great success and you get twice as much for less $$.
works fine on pots and tubes...De-oxit is great but expensive
